A man in Tha Rab subdistrict, Mueang Ratchaburi district, was shot dead by police on 24 September, after attacking officers with a knife. The incident occurred at around 10:00, on the roadside of Old Phetkasem Road, leaving the suspect dead at the scene. Police revealed the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh severing a major artery.

The incident began after police received reports from the public that a man was behaving violently with a knife in Soi 3 outside his home in Village 3, Tha Rab. Patrol officers from Tha Rab police station arrived to intervene, but the suspect resisted. Additional officers, including Pol Lt Col Worasak Khlongngam, arrived to assist in controlling the situation.

As officers approached, the suspect attempted to attack Pol Lt Col Worasak, who retreated and fell down a roadside embankment. The suspect continued to advance with the knife, prompting officers to fire at his leg to subdue him. The suspect was injured and taken to Ratchaburi Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts.

The victim was identified as Mr. Surapol, aged 60. Police recovered six 9mm shell casings and a blood-stained knife at the scene. Relatives said the deceased had a history of mental illness and was under medication. His daughter, Ms Thanawan, said her father had never harmed anyone and was simply sitting outside when police intervened. She said she would seek justice, claiming the police had used excessive force.

Pol Col Sayam Inthasuwanno, Deputy Chief of Ratchaburi Provincial Police, said the suspect had previously displayed violent behaviour and officers had been called to intervene before. He said the shooting was part of tactical procedures to prevent harm. The exact cause of death will be determined by the forensic institute to establish whether it was due to blood loss or another cause.

Police confirmed the case remains under investigation to ensure fairness for all parties involved. The incident has raised questions about the handling of individuals with mental illness and the use of force by police in such situations.
