A 25-year-old man in southern Thailand, Sakrin “Kae” Chayapan, was arrested for snatching a tourist's gold necklace while riding a motorbike. The incident, which occurred on August 9 at the Thung Sao Road intersection in Hat Yai, Songkhla province, raised concerns about tourist safety in the area. This prompted a rapid response from local police, resulting in Sakrin's arrest yesterday, September 24.

The theft happened while the tourist was in a public vehicle, and the suspect quickly fled the scene. Police, led by Colonel Thammarat Phetnongchum, used CCTV footage to track Sakrin's movements, ultimately leading to an arrest warrant being issued by the Songkhla Provincial Court. Sakrin was found at his mother’s home in Thung Wa district, Satun province, where police apprehended him.

Upon arrest, Sakrin confessed to the theft, citing unemployment and financial hardship but denied gambling ties. He admitted to selling the necklace, allegedly made of Malaysian gold, for just over 20,000 baht, using the money to cover motorbike payments and rent. He claimed his family was unaware of the crime, having told them he found the necklace.

This incident has heightened awareness about tourist-targeted crimes in Hat Yai, putting pressure on officials to enhance visitor safety. Authorities are under scrutiny to address these safety concerns proactively. Currently, Sakrin is in police custody, facing legal charges under Thai law.

A lame excuse, a couple of years in the slammer will sort him out.
