Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that the House of Representatives will be dissolved by January, setting the stage for a general election by March or early April. This move aligns with government plans to organize a constitutional amendment referendum alongside the election. The government's policy statement for parliament focuses on the economy, national security, disaster response, and social issues.

The announcement follows the cabinet's decision to submit a formal request to present its policy statement by the end of September. The new policy framework aims to streamline operations, require ministers to work seven days a week, and potentially hold cabinet meetings more frequently.

Experts view the proposed constitutional referendum as a significant step toward public participation in governmental processes. It will ensure inclusive participation from all sectors, focusing on listening to the public. Economic strategies include initiatives to reduce living expenses and enhance purchasing power, such as the "Khon La Khrueng" co-payment scheme, while supporting agricultural product price management.

Diplomatic efforts with Cambodia are also emphasized, with plans for peaceful negotiation and national defense enhancement. The government also intends to hold a referendum on the cancellation of a memorandum of understanding with Cambodia. In terms of social policy, the government remains firm on suppressing illegal gambling and opposes the legalization of gambling businesses.

Looking forward, the Election Commission will set the precise date for the forthcoming general election. The government’s plans for constitutional amendments through a referendum suggest a shift towards increased civic involvement. The strategic focus on multiple key areas indicates a comprehensive approach to governance during the upcoming election period.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai general election expected by March or early April 2024.
  • Government plans a referendum on constitutional amendments.
  • Economic and diplomatic strategies are central to policy priorities.
