A gunman riding a motorcycle opened fire on soldiers at the Rueso Ranger Battalion base in Narathiwat province, on 27 September 2025 at 06:40, before being shot dead. The incident occurred at Ban Baluka, Moo 7, Tambon Samakkhi, Rueso district, prompting a rapid security response. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack.

According to Police Colonel Supachai Supakitcharak, the suspect approached the base on a Suzuki motorcycle without a license plate. He fired one shot at soldiers before fleeing, only to return ten minutes later and fire two more shots. Soldiers returned fire with a rifle, forcing the attacker to abandon his motorcycle and flee on foot.

The pursuit ended in a nearby rice field about 200 metres from the base, where the suspect fired intermittently while using the terrain for cover. Soldiers called for him to surrender, promising safety and he complied, handing over his weapon. The suspect was wounded in the face and mouth and right collarbone and was rushed to Rueso Hospital but later died from his injuries.

Military sources confirmed the gunman as Mr Arofad, 35, from Moo 5, Tambon Samakkhi, Rueso district. He had no previous record of involvement in security-related offences. Relatives have been contacted to collect his body for religious rites. Locals described the man as mentally disturbed and a spirit medium who had expressed suicidal thoughts. Authorities are continuing to examine the incident for further motives.
