Train tickets can be booked up to sixty days in advance of the date of travel. You need to go to a railway station to purchase a ticket. Most all Thai train stations are computerized now, so you could buy a ticket for a Bangkok-Buriram train in say, Chiang Mai or Hat Yai.

The nighttime express to Ubon Ratchathani leaves Bangkok at 21:00 and passes through Buriram at 04:34, not the most convenient time for an arrival. I would opt for the daytime sprinter on this route: leaves Hualamphong at 05:45, arrives Buriram at 11:43.

I see from your profile that you're in England Simon - so I guess you're planning to take the train from Don Muang. The station is very easy to find, just follow the signs in arrivals or ask.

For fares and timetable check out:NE Line trains

You normally need to book in advance - especially for the first class, the train gets full up. Not sure how you'd book it from UK tho - perhaps try a friendly travel agent who specialises in Thailand.

Personally I prefer to hire a car from the airport - very easy drive to Buriram.
