THC percentage

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what the percentage of THC is in the average brick weed? Just need a ball park figure for comparison purposes. TIA.

Brick around 8%

Bud around 14%

Not much different no matter how much you pay.

But why buy brick, when hybrid bud can be had for 3bht/g?

I used brick back in the bad old days when the more exotic stuff wasn't available. It was to make cannabutter for my dear old Granny's oatmeal biscuit recipe. 20gms of weed to 250 gms of butter. I now have some nice trim which is 50/50 Indica/Sativa and is allegedly 30% THC. Trying to work out how much to put in the cannabutter. Don't want to make it too strong. Thanks for your input.

The last batch of MCT oil I made was early last year. I used a 210 ml bottle of high quality MCT oil that I bought on Lazada along with about 45 grams of grade A flower. For that amount of oil, 30 grams would probably be enough, but I wanted to see if I could make it extra strong. The flower I used was likely in the 25 to 28 percent THC range. I mixed four or five different indoor grown strains to vary the flower, but all from the same supplier and all testing at similarly high levels of THC. If you are using brick, it will probably be under 10 percent THC.

MCT oil works better than butter for this purpose. Once prepared, you can portion it into 30 ml glass dropper bottles, use it as an edible, store it for a very long time and adjust your dose drop by drop after some experimenting to find what feels right for you. You can also add flavor concentrates such as banana, mint, or vanilla if you want to improve the taste.

I keep mine in the fridge, and I still have quite a bit left. Even after a year it tastes perfectly fresh. I expect it will last at least two years if kept chilled and stored properly. One of the best things about MCT oil is that it stays liquid in the fridge and never hardens like coconut oil or other fats.

I also avoid using trim since it is much harder to strain out. When I prepare the flower I do not grind it but break it up into small pieces by hand so it stays more solid. This makes it easier to strain once the oil has infused. Using fine tea strainers I was able to remove about 98-99 percent of the plant material, leaving the oil nearly transparent after straining.

I lost about 30 percent of the oil during the infusion because some of it gets permanently absorbed by the cannabis flower and cannot be strained back out. The loss might be less if I had used less flower, but I did not mind. Even with that 30 percent loss, I still ended up with around 150 ml of infused oil, which is more than enough for me to keep on hand for quite a long time.

For dosing, I usually put anywhere from 5 to 10 to 15 drops on a teaspoon, place it in my mouth, and hold it there for about 30 to 45 seconds before swallowing. I generally start to feel the effects within about 90 minutes.

Thanks for all the oily info but if my Granny stipulates butter then it has to be butter!🙂

Can you please post how to do this, I have a lot of home grown I'd like to use up, never made any oil/butter before, TIA

@Chainsaw Expect less than 10%.

@RSD1 I read the best way is sublingual.

@Jeff the Chef Easiest way is with a slow cooker, water, butter and a tea strainer. I did this a while back when I had a shoulder problem. If home grown it should be cleaner than something purchased. The filth left in the water was astounding. Hence I would not recommend making oil unless you are sure of the cleanliness of the source product, as that dirt has to go somewhere. With a butter or coconut oil combo with water, most of the filth is dissolved or remains in the water.

I melt the butter, then add the weed and fry it very, very gently for about an hour. Then put through a sieve. The result is cannabutter. Refrigerate till needed. Dump the weed.

MCT oil is more versatile for consumption as an edible in my opinion. It can be put on a spoon and go right into your mouth or dripped onto chocolate and other food items before you pop it in your mouth. It will also last at least 2 years in the fridge, which is key.

Butter wont last nearly as long in the fridge and will turn rancid much more quickly than MCT oil. Also, there is less you can do with butter to consume it unless you like to bake stuff or put it on bread, which I don't.

The following link posted earlier by another member will get you about 85 percent of the way toward making cannabis infused MCT oil: https://emilykylenutrition.com/cannabis-infused-mct-oil/

The main thing I do differently from her instructions is that I don’t decarboxylate the cannabis in an oven. Instead, I do that step in a mason jar using the same double boiler setup that is used later for the infusion process.

Here is my method: First, I break up the flower by hand into small pieces. You can also use a food processor to save time, but only pulse it briefly in the food processor so it doesn’t get too finely ground. Do not grind it fully or it will be harder to strain from the oil later and there will be more loss of oil as well.

To convert (dcarb) the THCA in the cannabis into the active form of THC, something that requires heat, I place it in a sealed mason jar without oil and put the jar in a hot water bath for 45 to 60 minutes at 240F (115C) to decarb it. Once that step is finished, I add the oil into the jar, reseal it, and continue the hot water bath for another 4 to 5 hours at a lower heat around 185F (85C). As long as the temperature is between 170F (77C) and 190F (88C) for the infusion process, it should be fine. You also want to use a deep/tall boiling pot that allows you to cover at least 2/3 of the jar with water the entire time for both steps.

One thing not covered in the link above from Emily is that you must keep an eye on the boiling pot and top up water regularly as it evaporates, usually every 30 to 45 minutes. You don’t want the water level to get too low or the temperature could spike and burn your cannabis. I also put a 500 gram weight on top of the lid of the sealed jar the entire time that it is in the pot to prevent it from tipping over due to the heat and bubbles. On the bottom of the pot, I also place a folded piece of cotton fabric from an old t-shirt (a tea towel also works well) under the jar to stop the glass from making direct contact with the metal. This helps prevent the glass jar from cracking from direct heat. Just don’t use a very thick piece of fabric, or you will make the mason jar wobbly and risk tipping the jar over in the pot.

You will need the following items, all available inexpensively on Lazada:

Great. You are very welcome. Let me know how your oil turns out and if you discover any useful tweaks to the process along the way.

I gather you do your fair share of cooking, based on your username. So this should be a really easy undertaking for you.

The trim wont be 30 percent. If it came from bud that was 30 you may be looking at around 16 to 18 percent max. Also depends on the quality of the trim. Do you have any pics I could give you a pretty good idea of what levels you're looking at.

Without pics maybe you can describe the trim with some detail.

Failing that lower quality trim from 30 percent bud would come in around 12 percent.

@BritManToo was bang on about traditional brick. It almost always came back at 8 percent.

the brick weed we got that had the red thread thru it years ago?
id say was under 7%
the new brick weed?  maybe a little more thc
equal to  the weed we got from Mexico in the 60's

A former girlfriend used to infuse butter with trim from her plants and bake really nice Alice B. cookies.

Got me through  a bad rotator cuff injury in a time of no insurance and little money.

She even sent me a batch after a nasty breakup.🥰

Thank you everybody for your expert input. I now have a better idea of how much trim to use. In my next batch of biscuits (cookies) I intend to add 15 grams of trim to 250 grams of butter. I will report back and let you all know how the biscuits turned out. My dear old Granny would be so pleased that I'm using her old recipe!

Asking advice. 71 YO with long time diabetes ( thirty + years). Thinking about getting my ganja card.

Three known strokes, couple heart attacks, big time neuropathy, and now pain from amputation of two toes and some diabetic ulcers.

Can I get a card from Bumrumgrad Airport Hospital? They used to advertise on the walls of the waiting room but haven’t seen them last couple of visits.

Concerned about opiod use and seems Tramadol is not OTC at the local pharmacy any longer.

@Kwaibill Why do you need a card? Are you going to limit yourself to buying from expensive 'dispensaries'?

I'd say from your description, you should move directly to the product stage. Looking at the product and how you are going to take it, rather than tying yourself up with bureaucracy at this stage. You can look at getting a card later, if necessary.

Given your age and medical history, I wouldn't ever consider touching the stuff without speaking with your cardiologist first.

Two more nuanced points I forgot to mention earlier on making an MCT cannabis oil infusion:

As I mentioned above, I use a low-profile mason jar for straining and this is because it makes the final step easier of transferring the oil from the jar into the 30 ML bottles using the short glass droppers contained in the 30 ML bottles.

Then first letting the oil sit for a couple of hours in the straining jar before transferring to the 30 ML bottles also allows any leftover plant material to settle to the bottom of the mason jar first, so you get clean oil without bits of cannabis when you suck it up using the glass droppers.

For flavor infusion, I usually add about 2 ML of flavor concentrate to 30 ML of oil, but I suggest adding only with 1 ML first. Taste it, and then add more if desired. You might find 1 ML is enough, or you may want to add half or a full ML more. Experiment first to find what works best for you.

I use small McCormick flavor concentrates that come in 29 ML bottles which are also available on Lazada. They are inexpensive and come in a variety of flavors. I especially like banana, but natural vanilla is also good. Sometimes I mix the two, adding one ML of each to a 30 ML bottle of finished cannabis oil.

If you also want a bit of light sweetness, you can also add one small envelope packet of Sucralose sweetener to the 30 ML bottle and then shake it up. But again, add half a packet first, taste it, and then add more if desired to prevent overdoing it on the sweetener.

Result! The biscuits turned out to be the perfect strength. Half a biscuit gave me a nice mellow buzz from 8pm until bedtime. I then slept like a log and woke up at 7:30am ready for the day. Thank you all for your helpful input. 🙂
