Thailand's innovative methamphetamine treatment program has received accolades from ECOWAS, highlighting international interest in collaboration. The program's core—a methamphetamine abstinence effervescent tablet—impressed delegates from Ghana, Nigeria, and ECOWAS, who view Thailand as a model for effective rehabilitation. This initiative combines modern medical practices with traditional medicine and local herbs.

 

Somsak Kreechai, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTTAM), emphasized the delegates' admiration for the holistic treatment approach. The program's centerpiece, an effervescent tablet, won a gold medal at the INTARG 2025 show in Poland, underscoring its global recognition. Over 250,000 tablets have been dispensed to more than 5,000 patients across Thailand, with nearly 90% experiencing reduced withdrawal symptoms within 30 days.

 

Dr. Preecha Nootim, Assistant Director-General of the DTTAM, noted the rapid efficacy of the treatment, citing research where significant symptom reduction occurred within seven days among 519 users. The treatment transcends medication by promoting overall body and mind recovery using herbal medicines and alternative therapies such as meditation and foot reflexology.

 

ECOWAS members praised these integrated principles for their adaptability to West African contexts and plan to propose an international cooperation agreement based on Thailand's methods. The delegation's visit is expected to foster further collaboration between the regions, potentially influencing drug addiction treatment strategies in West Africa.
