The Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) has unveiled its GPO Metro Sky initiative, launching pharmacies at 14 key BTS Skytrain stations in Bangkok. This move makes health services and medications more accessible to the city's commuters. The initiative aims to integrate preventive care into daily routines, reducing minor illnesses and promoting overall well-being.

The 14 BTS stations include Chidlom, Asok, Phrom Phong, Sala Daeng, Chong Nonsi, On Nut, Ekkamai, Phra Khanong, Surasak, Saint Louis, Ploenchit, National Stadium, Mo Chit, and Ari. They provide a comprehensive selection of medications and health products. Dr Mingkwan Suphannaphong, the GPO's managing director, highlighted the project’s role in improving access to primary healthcare. Trained pharmacists are on hand to offer consultations and health advice, aligning with Thailand’s healthcare policy.

In addition to offering a wide range of health products, the pharmacies participate in the universal coverage scheme. This initiative allows patients to access free medication for 32 minor symptoms, enhancing healthcare accessibility. The GPO also introduced a membership system and digital services like Line OA and telepharmacy, providing personalised health guidance and simplifying medication enquiries for consumers.

Looking ahead, the pharmacies promise a hassle-free alternative for city dwellers seeking affordable, quality healthcare outside of hospitals. With operating hours from 7am to 8pm daily, commuters can expect convenient, everyday access to vital health services. This development reflects a broader effort to modernise healthcare access and meet the needs of busy urban lifestyles.

In Thailand the prices in pharmacies varies a lot. My guess is, that this pharmacy will have higher prices, than the local pharmacies located a few steps away from the platforms. I will rather continue to support my local pharmacy.

Will the staff of these pharmacies include a qualified pharmacist on duty for at least the number of hours daily specified by law or just pretty young things in white coats?
