Israel Demands UK Act on ‘Toxic Wave of Antisemitism

Israel's foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar

Israel’s foreign minister has called on the UK government to take urgent action against what he described as a “toxic wave of antisemitism” following a deadly attack on a Manchester synagogue.

Gideon Sa’ar condemned the “murderous attack” outside Heaton Park Synagogue on Yom Kippur, which claimed the lives of two Jewish worshippers. In a statement on X, Sa’ar accused British authorities of failing to address growing antisemitic and anti-Israeli sentiment, particularly on university campuses. He demanded “effective action and enforcement” from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government, saying that mere words were no longer enough.

Broadcaster and barrister Robert Rinder also urged solidarity with the Jewish community, recalling his grandfather’s survival of the Holocaust. In a moving message, he said Jewish families in Britain increasingly feel unsafe, with children walking to school “behind barbed wire protected by guns.” Rinder warned that history has shown the dangers when Jewish communities lose hope in their future within a country.

Former UK minister Zac Goldsmith also highlighted the rise in antisemitic incidents, pointing to pro-Palestinian protesters in London and warning that hatred of Jews and the West was being “weakly appeased” by the government. Conservative Shadow Minister Louie French added that the government must go further, calling for an immediate halt to what he described as “hate marches” in British cities.

The attack has reignited debate over antisemitism in the UK, with Jewish leaders and politicians warning that rising hostility could fracture trust and drive many British Jews to question their future in the country. Calls are growing for stronger policing, tougher enforcement against incitement, and a clear government commitment to protecting Jewish communities.

Key Takeaways

  • Israel accused the UK of failing to stop a “toxic wave” of antisemitism.

  • The Manchester synagogue attack on Yom Kippur killed two worshippers.

  • UK figures urge stronger action to protect Jewish communities nationwide.

Calling the kettle black, wot? Palestinians are Semites, too.

No, they are not. The use of the word "Semite" to refer to an ethnic group is outdated.  The Encyclopedia Britannica explains it this way (my bold blue text):  "Semite, obsolete term, popularized in the 19th century, that originally described a member of any people who speak one of the Semitic languages, a family of languages that includes Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic, Aramaic, and Tigrinya, among others. The term was later used in an ethnic sense, even though there has never been a shared Semitic identity among Semitic-speaking peoples. When used in that sense, Semite often referred specifically to people of Jewish origin, regardless of what language they spoke, a reflection of the antisemitism that was concurrent in 19th-century Europe."  https://www.britannica.com/topic/Semite

The word "anti-Semitism" or "antisemitism" entered the English language in1881 from the German Antisemitismus, which had been coined by Wilhelm Marr, a German journalist and agitator who thought it sounded more scientific and academic than the older Judenhaß  ("Jew hatred").  Marr himself is regarded as the "father of modern antisemitism,"  although he apparently renounced his anti-Jewish beliefs as an old man.  https://njop.org/the-origin-of-word-anti-semitism/

Bottom line:  the word "antisemitism" has never been used in the English language to mean anything but a hatred of  Jews.

Holding  Jews collectively responsible for the actions of the government of Israel is raw antisemitism.  It stems from the idiotic notion that all Jews share a common agenda involving domination of non-Jews.

No one in their right mind would have thought Catholics in Peru or Poland shared any responsibility for the actions of the Irish Republic Army or that Lutherans in Sweden were associated with the actions of  Baptist members of the KKK in the U.S.  Jews, however, are sometimes blamed for the actions of other Jews.

The Working definition of antisemitism by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance includes the following points, among others:

  • Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel.
  • Making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective — such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.
  • Calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion.

The IHRA is the world's leading body on the Holocaust and antisemitism.  The UK and many other countries have officially adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism.

It cant really be ignored that the attack on the Synagogue in Manchester was followed by some quite violent demonstrations (perhaps we should call them what they were - selebrations) in major UK cities including London, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Invalid comparison. It is the homeland of the Jews committing the atrocities. So yes, that reflects on Jews worldwide, whether you like it or not.

On the contrary, it's totally valid.  Israel is the homeland of Jews, just like Peru is the homeland of Peruvians and Poland is the homeland of Poles.  No one would say the actions, whether atrocities or not, of the Peruvian or Polish governments reflect on  Peruvians or Poles living outside their homelands.  The same is true for Jews.

Another example- about 90% of the population of Rwanda was Christian at the time of the genocide against Tutsis in 1994. It would have been considered ridiculous to blame Hutus, much less other Christians, outside Rwanda for the atrocities.  Same with Israelis and Jews in 2025.  I don't believe the IDF has committed genocide or atrocities in Palestine, but if for the sake argument I acknowledge the IDF could have, it nevertheless would be absurd to claim this reflects on Jews in the U.K. or other countries.  Jews outside Israel are in no way responsible for the actions of the Israeli government.

Agreed with your last sentence.

But that doesn't mean Israeli actions in Gaza and the west bank have no consequences.

Your comparison is invalid, caused by a state based on religion. You're mixing religion and statehood in your comparison.

They literally posted evidence of themselves committing war crimes , on social media. And the Israeli citizens supported that too. Sick people.

or Tunisian

or Qatari

or Yemeni

or Iranian

or living in any other country Israel sees fit to attack, only out of self-defense of course.

or US American

or German

or British

or living in any other country, where Israel has made your media report in their favor and your leaders suppress your basic right of freedom of speech and keep repeating things again and again and again until you really believe them, no matter how stupid or absurd they may be.

For example:

Judge: "Defendant, why did you trespass into the property of the plaintiff, beat him into coma, breaking most of his bones, killed his dog and burned his house down?

Defendant: "You honor, that was because I had built my new garage on his land. The plaintiff came to my house, we had an argument and then he slapped me in the face so I followed him to his place and did what your honor has described. That was pure self-defense. I am clearly the victim here."

The meaning of "demands" in this context is "urgently requests."  There is no "Or what?"  The headline of this thread could have read,   "Israel Urgently Requests UK Act on ‘Toxic Wave of Antisemitism.'"
