Blackpink Concerts Boost Bangkok Hotel Bookings to the Max

Bangkok's hotel industry is thriving thanks to the impending Blackpink concerts, with full occupancy expected at accommodations near Rajamangala National Stadium. This surge is part of Thailand’s burgeoning "gig tripping" trend, where a significant portion of event-goers are foreign attendees.

Piti Kuakiatngam, general manager of Alexander Hotel Bangkok, revealed that the hotel's 300 rooms are almost fully booked with a 90% occupancy rate for the Blackpink concerts on 24-26 October. Events at Rajamangala enable nearby hotels to maintain elevated room rates. The Alexander Hotel benefits from high demand, selling rooms at premium prices and reserving some for last-minute guests. The majority of Blackpink concert bookings come from international visitors, especially from China, Japan, and South Korea.

This pattern benefits hotels close to popular event locations, with extra bookings often seen from visitors to Rajamangala and the Mall Bangkapi. Furthermore, the hotel offers complimentary shuttle services to concertgoers.

Piti mentioned that hotels in downtown Bangkok must offer discounts due to weaker Chinese inbound tourism, contrasting with their robust demand. Despite the concert influx, the Alexander Hotel serves varied segments, like business and leisure travellers, since such events aren't weekly.

Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai from the Tourism Authority of Thailand explained the organisation’s support for events to boost tourism. The "Gig Tripping" trend, with concerts attracting 30-40% foreign attendees, has economic benefits. She also highlighted artist fan meetings, which attract devoted fans who spend significantly on accommodation, transport, and more.

For example, the "Choo Young Woo Asia Fanmeeting Tour in Bangkok" last month drew international fans, comprising 15% of attendees. These events bolster Thailand’s image as a top destination for high-profile gatherings.

Adith Chairattananon from the Association of Thai Travel Agents noted that concert tourism is a global trend appealing to young, niche markets. Most attendees travel independently, using online travel agents for all-in-one packages including transport and accommodation.

Key Takeaways

  • Blackpink concerts drive high hotel bookings in Bangkok.
  • "Gig Tripping" influences tourism trends, attracting many international visitors.
  • Concerts and fan meetings enhance Thailand's profile as an event destination.

What a nonsense as it seems that fans from all over the world will come to Thailand to see Blackpink....Blackpink perform in many other countries too so it is very unlikely that that fans will come to Thailand only to see them...If the hotles are full booked it will be because of Thai people who likes them, not by tourists

So two nights 90% occupancy in the concert's area. That will certainly put the Tourism income up. 555

Scoff, but it is still a positive impact  -  as events like this always are.

You have heard of domestic tourism?

and given the history of unreliability - i.e. shows being cancelled, (don't ask about The Stones, Robbie Williams or Morrissey) I won't even bother travelling from the North to Bangkok for a gig these days as I have suffered more than my share of cancellations) Why would anyone travel here for a band?  What is the gig capacity? How many nights? How many from out of town, staying with friends? How many hotel rooms near the gig WITH GOOD transport links?, the number of visitors just keeps shrinking.

Blackpink will perform three sold-out shows at Rajamangala National Stadium from Oct 24–26, becoming the first K-pop group to do so.

They are not my cup o' tea but good luck to Blackpink and hope their fans enjoy the concerts.  Hope Bangkok gets many more big bands to come and perform; maybe at some point there might be something I'd like to see.  Hope the local Thais in F&B make some money from this too.
