Police in Ayutthaya have filed three charges against a man, the son of a local politician, accused of killing his father-in-law following a violent confrontation during an attempted reconciliation with his estranged wife. The attack occurred on 5 October in Ban Sang, Bang Pa-in district, leaving the 60-year-old victim dead and the suspect hospitalised. Authorities have pledged a fair investigation after concerns arose about the suspect’s political family background.

The incident began when Mr Theerachot Pharod, 30, allegedly entered the home of his wife’s father, Mr Buncha Phusathong, after being refused entry. According to police, Theerachot, armed with a gun, confronted his wife, resulting in a short heated exchange. Mr Buncha, appeared from upstairs and the suspect raised his gun and fired at him. The victim then fired a number of shots that wounded Theerachot, who then retaliated by stabbing his father-in-law in the neck with a pair of scissors. Theerachot attempted to flee but collapsed nearby due to his injuries and was detained by local residents before being taken to hospital.

Investigations revealed that Theerachot had previously argued with his wife at their home in another province, prompting her to leave with their child and stay with her father. On 23 September, Mr Buncha had lodged a complaint at Sinthiwa Police Station after Theerachot allegedly threatened and verbally abused him. Two days before the fatal encounter, Theerachot reportedly posted threatening messages on social media, which authorities believe signalled his intent to confront the family.

On 6 October, Pol Col Adirek Pothipan, Superintendent of Bang Pa-in Police Station, confirmed that Theerachot faces three charges: murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and trespassing. Investigating officer Pol Lt Col Thawon Saengsai was ordered to ensure transparency and fairness in handling the case. Police stressed that the suspect’s connection as the son of a local politician would not influence proceedings. Theerachot remains under police guard in hospital, where his condition is described as stable.

Authorities continue to gather forensic evidence from the crime scene and social media activity. Once medically cleared, Theerachot will be transferred to court custody to face formal prosecution. Police have assured the victim’s family that justice will be served and public confidence maintained throughout the investigation.
