Chiang Mai authorities have imposed restrictions on the release of sky lanterns and fireworks in six districts during the Yi Peng Lanna Light Festival 2025, taking place on November 5 and 6. The measures aim to ensure public safety and protect airspace during the festivities. Violations of these regulations could result in severe penalties, including up to five years in prison or fines up to 200,000 baht.

The six districts designated as Special Surveillance Level 1 (Red Zones) include Mueang Chiang Mai, Hang Dong, Saraphi, San Sai, Mae Rim, and San Pa Tong. In these areas, the release of lanterns and fireworks is strictly banned to maintain safety. The Toffy Zone, an area crucial for flight safety, also prohibits such activities.

Sky lanterns and fire lanterns may only be released from 7pm to 1am on November 5 and 6 in authorized zones. Smoke lanterns have a specific release window from 10am to 12pm on November 5. Residents in approved areas must apply for permission using the “Bampen” mobile app and register with their district office.

Failure to comply with these rules is punishable by up to five years in jail, a fine of 200,000 baht, or both. If the release causes a fire, penalties can increase to seven years in prison and a fine of 140,000 baht. Chainarong Nantasa, Chiang Mai Provincial Clerk, emphasized the importance of adhering to these guidelines.

Authorities have issued clear instructions to manage the event safely. As the festival approaches, residents are reminded to plan accordingly and submit permission requests in the required timeframe.

Profits before pleasure!

Instead of banning flights for 6hrs, 6pm until midnight, for one night of the year, they choose to destroy traditional Lanna culture.
