Municipal waste collectors in Ayutthaya made a shocking discovery on 8 October, when they found the body of a baby girl in a rubbish bin in Khlong Chik Subdistrict, Bang Pa-in District. Police have launched an urgent investigation to identify and locate the mother responsible for abandoning the child.

Police Lieutenant Preeda Khawphong, deputy investigator at Bang Pa-in Police Station, received the report and attended the scene on Indo 6 Alley, Moo 2, along with rescue officers from the Phutthaisawan Foundation. The infant, believed to be a female foetus around four to five months cessation, appeared to have been dumped only a few hours earlier. Bloodstained cloths were also found in the bin and collected as evidence.

Mr. Udom Watchanarath, 58, a municipal garbage collector, said he and a colleague were emptying bins in the area when they noticed a cloth bundle inside one container. “I thought I could use it to wipe down the truck, but it was soaked with clotted blood,” he recalled. “When I opened it, I found the baby’s body. At first, I wanted to bury it at a temple, but the municipality said we couldn’t, so we immediately called the police.”

Local official Ms. Suphawarn Chueapong, subdistrict deputy headwoman, said the surrounding area consists mainly of dormitories occupied by Cambodian and Myanmar migrant workers. The bin where the baby was found serves as a communal collection point for several buildings, and residents from nearby dormitories dispose of their waste there daily. Because of this, officials cannot yet determine which dormitory the body came from.

Authorities suspect the mother may be a young migrant worker who either experienced a premature birth or intentionally terminated the pregnancy. Police investigators are now gathering records of residents and tenants in nearby dormitories to identify the mother.

As the investigation continues, officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The case has prompted renewed discussion on the challenges faced by migrant women in Thailand, particularly regarding access to healthcare and reproductive support.
