Samsen Road Remains Closed as BMA Ensures Ground Stability

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced on 9 October that Samsen Road in Dusit district will remain closed while the Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) and contractors reinforce the ground to prevent further subsidence. The road, which was initially expected to reopen on the 9 October, will stay shut for an extended period as engineers adjust their plans to ensure long-term stability.

Governor Chadchart inspected the site in the morning and explained that the MRTA has shifted its focus to strengthening the soil beneath the affected area. The main activity now involves soil drilling and grouting, a process in which cement is injected underground to increase strength and prevent future collapses. Once the ground is confirmed stable, workers will refill and compact the area before reopening the road.

He added that although Bangkok’s weather forecast predicts heavy rainfall over 70% of the city, officials are less concerned about rain disrupting the process, as the soil condition has improved. The governor emphasised that the city’s priority is to ensure lasting safety rather than reopening the road prematurely.

Nearby, the Samsen Police Station building continues to experience ground movement, particularly around its fourth pillar. Engineers are closely monitoring the situation and gradually removing weight from the upper structure. Governor Chadchart noted that the building will eventually be demolished carefully to avoid destabilising the surrounding soil.

To ease travel disruptions, the Vajira Hospital has coordinated with police and contractors to increase shuttle bus services for patients and visitors. As nearby schools remain closed for the holidays, traffic in the area has not yet been significantly affected.

Governor Chadchart concluded that the repair work has proven more complex than initially anticipated due to changing ground conditions. He reiterated that the focus remains on safety, precision and long-term stability, rather than speed. “We won’t rush to reopen,” he said, “because it’s more important to ensure the road won’t collapse again.”

Key Takeaways

• Samsen Road’s reopening is delayed as MRTA strengthens unstable ground.

• Engineers are using cement grouting to prevent further subsidence.

• Authorities prioritise long-term stability and safety over quick completion.

This method is called compaction grouting  while this method is suitable for soil stabilization and ground-shoring, it comes with challenges that must be addressed. Factors such as soil type play a significant role in determining the success of the grouting procedure. For instance, clay-based soils may not respond as expected, leading to complications in achieving the desired results. Additionally, the management of pressure during grouting is critical, as improper handling can result in soil fracturing instead of compaction. another Thai engineering mishap Bangkok soil is clay based !!!

this has to be done under pressure so the cement perpetuates the surrounding soil  bet these guys just pour cement down the hole which will achieve nothing, this is numbskull engineering

The article says they will inject cement and seems that they already pumped a heap of sand down there.

My question is will the roof of the train tunnel hold out they surely have to do something serious with that.
