Suratin Chaichomphu, renowned for his role in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue, has been left paralyzed following a motorcycle accident on May 24. Known as "Khwan the Driller," his efforts were pivotal in saving 12 boys and their coach trapped in the cave. He now requires constant care at his home in Mae On district, Chiang Mai, under the watchful eyes of his wife, Piyamas Pratharnchai.

Mr. Suratin sustained a broken neck and severed nerves in his cervical spine during the accident in Tak province. The family, who relies on their groundwater drilling business, has faced financial difficulties due to his condition, losing about 70% of their income. They've already sold three trucks to manage medical expenses and seek further assistance for specialized equipment.

Ms. Piyamas shared the logistical challenges of transporting Mr. Suratin for monthly hospital visits, emphasizing the absence of adequate assistance in their household. Despite his health struggles, Mr. Suratin maintains a positive outlook and has recently begun communicating after months of silence. He publicly supported Vernon Unsworth, a fellow Tham Luang rescuer facing health issues.

Looking forward, Mr. Suratin expressed a desire to meet with British cave divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, who played key roles in the 2018 rescue. This sentiment highlights the strong bonds formed during the operation. Meanwhile, his wife has appealed to the Royal Household Bureau to extend royal patronage for his healthcare, reflecting the family's ongoing search for support and recovery

Key Takeaways

  • Suratin Chaichomphu, key to 2018 cave rescue, is now paralyzed.
  • His family business struggles financially, losing 70% of income.
  • Royal patronage has been requested for Mr. Suratin’s care.
