Trump Orders George Santos’s Immediate Prison Release

In a startling move, US President Donald Trump announced the commutation of George Santos's sentence on Friday. Santos, a former Congressman, was serving a seven-year sentence for fraud and identity theft. Trump proclaimed Santos's immediate release through his social media, describing him as a "rogue" and highlighting similar cases across the nation without such severe penalties.

Santos, a New York Republican, was sentenced in April after admitting to defrauding donors and stealing identities, including those of family members. Since July, he had been held at a minimum-security prison in New Jersey. Santos penned letters during his 84-day prison sentence, appealing directly to Trump and emphasising his loyalty to the president's agenda.

Andrew Mancilla, Santos’s lawyer, expressed delight at the decision, although the release date remains uncertain. He praised Trump's action, arguing the original sentence was excessive. The move attracted support from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had previously condemned the sentence as unjust and an example of judicial overreach.

Santos's release follows Trump's recent pattern of acts of clemency for former Republican figures. In May, Trump pardoned ex-Congressman Michael Grimm and former Connecticut Governor John Rowland. These acts continue amidst Trump's own legal battles, including a conviction related to hush money payments, which he labels a political witch hunt.

George Santos first emerged as a promising star in the GOP, becoming the first openly gay Republican elected to Congress in 2022. However, his rapid fall from grace began with revelations of fabricated life stories, leading to investigations on campaign financing. Initially a business consultant, his false claims included achievements at Baruch College and connections to Wall Street giants.

Charges of theft, unemployment fraud, and congressional lying led to Santos' expulsion from the House, making him one of only six representatives. Now freed, his future remains uncertain as Trump's decision draws both support and criticism.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump commuted George Santos's sentence, citing harsh penalties faced by him in contrast to others.
  • Santos had been jailed for fraud and identity theft but was supported by key Republicans.
  • This act follows a series of clemency cases brought by Trump for Republican politicians.

“At least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!” “He lied like hell,” Mr. Trump said at the time. “And I didn’t know him, but he was 100 percent for Trump.”

Everyone forget the pre-emptive pardons signed by the auto pen? Of course you all did.

I mean why would anyone need pre-emptive pardons unless they are guilty of something.

No. Because they knew people like Fauci lied to Congress and they were protecting him.

and Tish James campaigning on “locking up Trump” wasn’t a with hunt? It’s almost as if you democrats (who stand for zero democracy) only see things in one direction.

She's right, trump's a criminal and should be locked up.

Hunter Biden, Michael Conahan ('kids for cash' judge), Rita Crundwell (embezzled over $53 million) commuted and let's not forget Biden's preemtive pardons. Haven't seen any mention of this from the sydrome sufferers.

Pathetic whataboutery!
If the sentence was disproportionate then I have no issue with the commutation. However we all know that had he been a Democrat then Trump would have left him to rot in jail. That is the crux of this matter.

Just about every one is seeing through Trump now. Hispanics, blacks, farmers, citizens of NY, and even the religious right is beginning to see the light. Nov 26 the grifter will be shackled with no house and no senate. His approval ratings are falling monthly. Lying grifter pardoned by a lying grifter president.

So your justification is Trump is no worse than Biden?

Did you buy your cheap Chinese moral compass from Temu, or get it from the bargain bin at a thrift store?

Like the lawfare witch-hunt waged against Trump?  That witch-hunt.  I'm no fan of Trump, but I'm even less of a fan of lawfare.

Yes of course you have a thing there.

Trump is not worried about little legalities like that, jan 6 and in total around 1600 convicted criminals were pardonned

by trump.

Why did Joe Biden do pre emptive pardons?

Because he knew who/what was coming.
