A 28 million baht sports arena in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, has been unused and neglected for over two years, stirring concerns about waste and mismanagement. The arena, located in the suburban part of Nakhon Phanom municipality, has become rundown and overgrown, with uncut grass and a deteriorating running track. Passakorn Phutthananupakorn, provincial chief of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), stated that such inactivity is not unusual and denied reports that the stadium's construction cost 100 million baht.

The facility was originally constructed by the SAT to promote sports activities in Nakhon Phanom and neighboring provinces. Despite the intent, events have not been organized there, and maintenance struggles have been attributed to excessive rainfall. The SAT central office in Bangkok is reportedly considering allocating funds for cleanup and renovation, acknowledging the deteriorating state and public concern.

Local officials appear unsurprised by the situation, suggesting it is typical for some venues to remain inactive for extended periods. However, conflicting reports from maintenance staff indicate that budgetary support has been absent for years, exacerbating the neglect. In contrast, another stadium closer to the city center, built by the Provincial Administration Organisation, is well maintained and serves as the home venue for Nakhon Phanom FC, a local football club.

The situation highlights varied priorities and resource allocation in infrastructure management within the region. The SAT's acknowledgment of the issue and consideration of funding suggests potential forthcoming improvements. However, official plans and timelines remain undisclosed as of now.

Key Takeaways

  • A 28 million baht stadium in Nakhon Phanom remains unused and neglected for over two years.
  • SAT officials claim inactivity is common, but maintenance struggles cite a lack of budget.
  • Renovation funding is under consideration, yet exact plans are not yet revealed.
