A 40-year-old Chinese man has been arrested in Bangkok for illegally working as a tour guide while leading a group of Chinese tourists through the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. The arrest was part of a nationwide operation targeting unlicensed guides and illegal tour operations as Thailand enters its high tourism season.

On 22 October 2025, officers from the Tourist Police Bureau’s Investigation Division, led by Pol Col Man Rotthong and Pol Lt Col Piyapong Bukkhunthot, detained Mr. Zhang Daqing, a Chinese national, near the Wat Phra Kaew entrance. The operation followed an urgent directive issued on 15 October 2025 (No. 0038.132/4365) from the Tourist Police Bureau, ordering a crackdown on ten priority offences, particularly focusing on illegal tour guides and unregistered tourism businesses.

Investigators had received intelligence about a group of Chinese nationals allegedly acting as guides without authorisation near a hotel in the Ratchada area. Surveillance teams monitored the suspects and observed Zhang coordinating a tour group, checking attendance and leading them onto a tour bus. Officers followed the group as they travelled to Wat Phra Kaew, during which Zhang was seen holding a microphone and providing commentary to the tourists in Chinese.

Upon arrival at the temple, Zhang waved a tour flag and led his group through Gate 2 and the Maneenopparat Gate, before waiting near the Viset Chaisri Gate. Tourist Police officers then identified themselves, approached Zhang and formally placed him under arrest at the scene.

Zhang was charged with acting as a tour guide without authorisationunder tourism laws and with working without a valid work permit or performing work outside the scope of permitted employment as a foreign national. He was transferred to Chanasongkram Police Stationfor legal proceedings.

Authorities emphasised that the crackdown aims to protect licensed Thai tour guides and ensure safety and transparency for tourists visiting the country. The operation will continue throughout the high season to curb illegal tourism-related activities.
