Thai authorities are conducting urgent screening of 1,233 foreign nationals who fled a military crackdown in Myanmar’s Kayin State. The group, representing 28 nationalities, entered Thailand via the Mae Sot border in Tak province, prompting coordinated action by police, immigration and military officials.

The situation follows a military operation in the KK Park area of Myawaddy, Myanmar, which forced civilians to flee across the border. Authorities quickly mobilised to process the arrivals, ensuring security and proper registration. As of 25 October, 124 individuals had completed initial screening, with two identified as victims of human trafficking.

Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Thatchai Pitanilabutr led a meeting in Mae Sot on 25 October to assess the situation. Officials discussed screening procedures, investigative protocols, and the handling of foreign nationals pending potential repatriation or legal action. The two trafficking victims have been placed under protective care and are undergoing rehabilitation for eventual return to their home countries or legal proceedings.

Pol Gen Thatchai said that screening and investigation will take approximately four days, involving central investigation officers. Repatriation will be coordinated through embassies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with China already engaged. Other nationalities will follow similar channels, while legal proceedings will continue for those involved in offences.

The largest groups among the 28 nationalities are from India, followed by China and Vietnam. Ethiopia presents a challenge as it lacks an embassy in Thailand or Myanmar, requiring additional coordination through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Thai authorities will use established mechanisms from previous operations, which have previously successfully repatriated over 9,000 foreign nationals.
