BTS Skytrain Fares to Increase on Green Line Extensions

Starting November 1, 2025, Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc will implement a fare increase on the BTS Skytrain’s Green Line extension routes. The rates will rise from 15 to 17 baht, with a maximum fare not exceeding 65 baht for trips that include both the core line and its extensions. This increase targets the routes from Mo Chit to Khu Khot, On Nut to Kheha, and Wong Wian Yai to Bang Wa.

Previously, a flat fare of 15 baht was applied to these extensions, causing the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to incur losses due to insufficient revenue to cover the costs. With expenses totaling around 9.012 billion baht annually, while revenue stood at only 2.4 billion baht, the fare adjustment became necessary to manage the fiscal deficit.

To mitigate the impact, the BMA has introduced relief measures including a 30% fare discount for children and students under 23, and a 50% discount for senior citizens over 60. These efforts aim to ease the burden on regular commuters, especially those using the extension routes exclusively, as they experience fare increases of 2-30 baht depending on travel distance.

As a result of the fare restructuring, expert opinions have circulated, reflecting both understanding and concern over the financial sustainability of the transit system. Economists highlight the necessity of balancing operational costs while maintaining affordable public transportation options for the city's residents.

Looking forward, the BMA plans to monitor the impact of these changes closely. Passengers are advised to stay informed about potential further revisions and the effectiveness of the relief measures in maintaining ridership levels.

Key Takeaways

  • BTS fare increase on Green Line extensions begins November 1, 2025.
  • Discounts offered for students and seniors aim to reduce financial impact.
  • Maximum fare across core and extension lines remains at 65 baht.
