Do Google Nest Audio or similar smart speakers work here?

Featured Replies

I'd like to get smart speakers that I can voice command to play podcasts, news, music and get voice answers to queries, in English. Has anyone ordered Google Nest Audio speakers or similar and got them to work with full functionality in Thailand?

I don't see why they would not  work.

I also don't see why you would want the NSA listening to everything going on in your house.

Yes, they work just fine here. And the NSA has better things to do than listen to retired Farangs in Thailand.

Which speakers are you using that work fine? And where did you purchase? Thanks.

Do they ??  and who else might be listening ?  I don't trust them one bit  and would only use a voice commanded device if it was  only linked directly to my own server  with no  cloud interaction involving Google,Amazon,Oracle   or any other "cloud" based service.

And no I don't have any such device in my house..well maybe  a smartphone or 2 😋

and a set of headphones connected to my pc  and of course the blinking LED hack

:w00t:  💀

I have a collection of Amazon Echo Dots scattered around the house, they all work fine. I brought one over from the UK, I ordered one through Amazon Japan, the other three I bought through Lazada.

I have a Google Nest Mini, cost about 1900 baht at Lazada.

Takes about 15 minutes to set up including smart phone setup.

The Google Nest Mini works here, I can confirm, I have two. However, they are dumb as straw. So much for the much vaunted AI revolution, you can't even control your TV with them.

The microphone is so weak you have to shout like a demented Alf Garnett just so it does set the timer at the 3rd attempt "HEYYY GOOGLE! SET TIMER!!! THREEEEE MINUTES""

Don't forget, you're not paranoid if they really are out to get you.

I have two of these and am spoiled I have Apple plan.  1290 shopee

My Nest Mini works fine.
I connected it to my LG ThinQ AI TV, but control is limited.
It works better with Google or Android OS TVs.
You can adjust mic sensitivity in the app — dust or debris can also affect pickup.
Gen 1 Minis have poor mic sensitivity; Gen 2 are better.
My Nest also works well with switches and my washing machine.
I didn’t get a Wi-Fi module with my AC, but aftermarket ones are available.
AI is not 100% yet, but getting there.
My car’s Google, Android Auto, and Toyota integration works better.

Yes, thanks for the reminder on the mic setting, I think I already maxed it out, but I'll check! Yes, TV control is very limited. You can't say "play a Ray Charles song" and get it to do that. Which is odd, it seems such an easy thing to do. One and off, up and down. So basic.

local purchased ones only work with Thai language... best to import.

I suggest that is not the case: the language is set in the App.
All will work in English irrespective where in the world there are bought.
The only language I know of not supported is Russian.

Xiaomi Smart Speaker or Mi Smart Speaker works with Google Assistant and can use in Thailand. Find in Lazada or Shopee The only issue is might not work with Gemini in the future.

Only the Chinese products are available for sale in Thailand, and Google assistant has been removed from them. So they're not much use.

I have 3x Mi smart speakers from before the change, and they're really good.

Wish I could buy more as they are much better than Google nest, and we're half the price.

This one from Lazada shows it works with Google Assistant.

Buy it, I'll bet it doesn't work!

My android phone updated today seems Gemini AI integration into Google Home is happening now  with rollout here early next year.

This update with give more functionality to existing Google Nest devices with the more advanced features subscription based.

A new Gen AI Nest speaker will be released next year too.

Thanks to all for responses to my original query. Know of any physical store in Bangkok where I can try Google Nest Audio or similar. I have not been able to find.

Also, maybe wait for Gemini next year? Or can speaker purchased now be upgraded online to Gemini next year (probably a dumb question)?

It was a few years ago, but there was a small shop in Fortune IT Mall that stocked Google products. I no longer have their business card, but they were on one of the lower floors, at the hotel end, in the audio and camera shop area, not at the food court end. Whether it's still there I don't know, but they also stocked top-of-the-range headsets like Jabra.

Classic bait & switch tactics from a Lazada vendor. This is why I switched to Shopee although there are a few on there as well.
