Police have launched an investigation after the body of a newborn baby girl was discovered trapped in a drainage gate in Bangkok’s Khlong Toei district on the morning of 4 November 2025. Authorities are working to determine whether the infant died before or after birth and how her body ended up in the canal system.

The discovery was reported to Pol Lt Col Sutthawat Sripornwan, who responded to the scene at the Phai Phithak drainage gate on Khlong Phai Singto, Duang Phithak Road, Khlong Toei. Medical staff from Chulalongkorn Hospital, forensic officers and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were called to assist. The baby’s body, a full term female infant, was found among floating debris caught in the metal trash screen in front of the drainage gate.

Officials carefully removed the remains for examination and evidence collection. According to 51-year-old gate operator Mr. Nipon, he was conducting his routine morning inspection around 08:30 when he spotted the body. He explained that the hydraulic trash rake was in operation when he noticed what appeared to be a baby entangled among the rubbish. He immediately informed authorities.

Initial investigations suggest the body may have drifted downstream with floodwaters during recent heavy rains before becoming trapped at the drainage gate. Officers believe it could have floated from the Ratchada area through the connected canal system. At this stage, investigators have not determined whether the child was stillborn or alive at the time of disposal.

The body has been transferred to the forensic department at Chulalongkorn Hospital for a post-mortem examination to confirm the cause and timing of death. Police are reviewing CCTV footage in nearby areas and tracing the water flow path to identify where the baby may have entered the canal.

Authorities have appealed for public assistance and any information that could help trace the person or persons responsible for abandoning the body. The case remains under active investigation.
