Police in Chanthaburi have arrested a father and son shortly after they attempted to rob a gold shop to pay off gambling debts. The robbery, which took place on the afternoon of 5 November 2025, ended without any loss of valuables after the shop owner drew a gun to defend the premises.

At around 13:50, officers from Thung Bencha Police Station in Tha Mai district were alerted to an attempted gold theft at the Mae Kim Tiang gold shop, Nong Kla branch. CCTV footage showed two suspects entering the store, one man in a blue shirt posed as a customer while another, wearing a black balaclava came in and smashed a display case with a hammer. The shop owner quickly retrieved a firearm and pointed it at the assailants, forcing them to flee empty-handed.

Police patrol and investigative teams immediately launched a manhunt, sealing off nearby areas. Within 40 minutes, both suspects were captured nearby. Investigators confirmed that the robbers had not taken any gold, though the shop owner sustained minor injuries while resisting the raid.

Pol. Col. Arkhaphong Sunthornwipat, Deputy Commander of Chanthaburi Provincial Police, led the arrest operation together with officers from the Thung Bencha Police Station. The suspects were identified as Mr. Mobin, 40, from Tha Mai district, who smashed the glass display and his 18-year-old stepson, Mr. Supadit, who acted as a lookout.

During questioning, Mr. Mobin admitted to planning the robbery due to gambling debts in Rayong province. He said he had intended to sell the stolen gold to repay his creditors but panicked when the shop owner produced a gun, causing him and his stepson to run from the scene. Both were apprehended soon after.

Police are continuing to interrogate the pair to determine whether they are linked to other robberies or part of a wider criminal network. Investigators are also reviewing additional CCTV footage and collecting physical evidence.
