Thailand Suspends Accord with Cambodia Over Border Landmines

Thailand has halted a crucial agreement with Cambodia after Thai soldiers were injured by landmines near the shared border, sparking urgent action from national security leaders. The National Security Council, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, opted to suspend the Thai-Cambodian Kuala Lumpur Declaration following the recent explosion. This incident has reignited ongoing tensions between the two countries.

In a briefing by Defence Minister General Nattapol Nakphanit and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew, it was confirmed that Thailand would stop returning 18 Cambodian prisoners of war and suspend the removal of heavy weapons. General Nattapol criticized the landmine incident, emphasizing that it violated Thai sovereignty. Specific military initiatives have been approved but remain undisclosed.

The Kuala Lumpur Declaration's suspension marks Thailand's zero tolerance for perceived provocations. Sihasak dismissed Cambodian claims that the mines were remnants, noting the lack of goodwill. Thailand has filed a formal protest demanding an investigation and plans to inform international parties, including the U.S. and Malaysia, who were involved in the original agreement.

Thailand is set to submit a complaint under the Ottawa Convention, underscoring its commitment to international regulations against landmines. General Nattapol hinted that operations might increase if future provocations occur. The Thai government, through the Thailand Mine Action Centre, has already deployed teams in multiple border zones, while Cambodia has yet to address remaining areas.

Dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia is halted, focusing instead on maintaining sovereignty. The Thai government remains steadfast in its stance, prioritizing its territorial integrity.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand halted an agreement with Cambodia after a landmine incident.
  • Officials seek a full investigation and plan to notify international parties.
  • Thailand continues demining efforts and upholds its position on sovereignty.

I wondered how long it would last - not long.

Didn't Trump make all sorts of concessions to help secure a lasting peace?

I believe he did make some concessions related to import tariffs ? I guess that will now end.

Where's the Thai infliuencer when he's needed.

let's be real, there are forces behind the curtains on both sides that do not want this conflict to end.

some say its historical, others say its regional politics. either way you can bet tension will flare up again.

This isn't good for the Thai economy. Many Thai companies export to Cambodia.

They shouldn't.

Last two days there have been fighter jets buzzing around over me, I am in North Pattaya. Today after circling for 30 minutes I saw one take off to the east. Seems like a show of force to me.

Come on , a little more conflict to get the baht down again.

Yes of course, but only $TRUMP

Counting on the support of all MAGADI's

The particular issue with landmines this time round is whether or not they are newly planted.

Thais say Yes, Cambodians No. The Thai view would need good evidence to support it ie mine went off & wounded Thai soldier in an area already cleared.

Mmmm, given the terrain, hard to prove either way.

After facing opposition taunts over lost sovereignty, Hun Sen ordered Gen Hing Bunheang to embed in Preah Vihear to plan a new offensive, the move believed to have led to Monday’s landmine incident.

Huai Ta Maria, located about 1.6 kilometres from Phu Makua, is considered a strategic zone where Cambodian forces are reportedly attempting to seize control in order to retake Phu Makua, a contested border outpost.

Losing control of Phu Makua would be seen as a loss of sovereignty, a politically sensitive issue that Cambodia’s opposition has used to attack Prime Minister Hun Manet and former leader Hun Sen

Recent intelligence indicates that Cambodian soldiers secretly removed barbed wire and replanted landmines inside Thai territory near Huai Ta Maria

Sources report that Hun Sen has ordered Gen Hing Bun Hieng, Commander of Cambodia’s elite Bodyguard Headquarters (BHQ), to remain embedded in Preah Vihear province to find ways to reclaim the area.Cambodian army general.webp

I absolutley agree, even though business with Cambodia is small. Thai companies arre not allowed to export to Cambodia as there is a ban on many Thai products and produce, including LPG and other petroleum products. There is also a general boycott of  Thai products and Services. Here in Siem Reap the PTT petrol/gas stations are ghost-like with no customers. It is the same for the 7-11 and Amazon Coffee shops. I visited MAKRO today and it was interesting to see Cambodian flags by produce marked "sourced locally". Nothing coming in from Thailand. Thai companies in Cambodia currently face a "do not buy Thai" nationwide boycott. IMO Thailand has certainly shot its self in the foot! Many better quality products without the high sugar content are being imported from friendly nations such as the EU, UK, USA, Australia/New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, India and Vietnam. What a choice we have on the supermarket shelves these days!

It's also not good for Thailand tourism. Due to the continued border closure, many of us who used to rely on visa runs to the Cambodia border are being forced into more expensive options. That will significantly impact many who will either reduce their length of stay, or seek more stable options with relaxed visa requirements elsewhere next time i.e. Vietnam instead of Thailand.

What, for getting a visa that actually suits your circumstances?

The METV (multi-entry tourist visa) has suited my circumstances for the previous 10 years, only now with the Cambodian border closure has it become an issue. I am here in Thailand for 5.5 months to escape Canada's harsh winters. My point is, Thai Immigration should be doing something on a temporary basis while the border dispute continues, even if that means permitting a couple of 60 day extensions for those on an METV because 12 hours there and another 12 back for a visa run to Laos in a commuter van is just an accident waiting to happen; not to mention more than double the cost. If the border dispute continues, I may consider going to Vietnam where the visa requirements are less onerous. I have a few friends already considering that option, especially when you add on the over inflated Thai baht.

Thailand is only hurting itself.

Yet he is enjoying a second term as President , despite countless failed attempts to prevent that happening, from his delusional opponents and the leftist dominated media.

So he must be doing something right,  perhaps, just perhaps he is not as stupid as some claim?

The collapse of the peace deal is hardly Trumps fault, The cambodian regime have no interest in ending hostilities, rather they clearly  hope to continue the conflict  whilst attempting to garner support from the "international community"  with lies and fake news

Only thailand exercising remarkable restraint is preventing an escalation in hostilities

Thailand supported Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. They often came to Ubon for R and R.

Thailand provided the KR with landmines at the time.

I would have thought it would be difficult for anyone to be sneaking around the border area to lay more landmines without getting caught.

Why doesn't Thailand agree to have the border line confirmed by an independent party?
