Health officials in Thailand are urging immediate political measures to address a significant rise in domestic violence cases, with over 17,900 incidents reported this year. The Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) is demanding stronger, unified policies after alarming figures were discussed at a seminar held on November 13. The seminar, part of a global campaign against violence, noted that women are primarily affected.

The event, supported by the Friends of Women Foundation and other organizations, highlighted the urgent need for Safe Homes and Safe Cities. Porranee Poobrasert, Deputy Manager of ThaiHealth, emphasized that domestic violence has become a pressing national concern, fueled by issues such as substance abuse and mental health problems. ThaiHealth called for increased efforts in prevention and policy reform.

Thanawadee Thajeen of the Friends of Women Foundation revealed their initiatives had aided 276 people from 33 families, indicating these programs will be scaled up nationwide. At the seminar’s conclusion, ThaiHealth and partners proposed seven policy recommendations to female representatives of four political parties. These proposals include declaring domestic violence a national agenda and enhancing victim protection.

A focal point is the People’s Draft Domestic Violence Protection Act, which seeks to eliminate leniency towards abusers in Thailand. The act, supported by over 26,000 signatories, aims to create safer conditions for women and children. Sasinan Thamnithinan from the People’s Party and Rudklao Intawong Suwankiri from the Democrat Party both called for coordinated national efforts to tackle the issue, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand reports over 17,900 domestic violence cases this year.
  • ThaiHealth calls for stronger policies and national coordination.
  • A draft act seeks to enhance protection and end tolerance for violence.

Tend to agree for every ten reported at least 90 stay silent

Violence against women is a significant problem and a universal phenomenon around the world, including in Thailand.

In Thai society, Intimate Partner Violence is considered as a private issue and family matter because the family is an important social institution, and portrayed as a space of love and care, however, in reality family violence exists. Most Thais learn they should not tell outsiders about internal family matters. As a result, Intimate Partner Violence remains an invisible and unrecognized issue in Thai society and women victims have to deal with their intimate violence in their lives alone

Individuals who notify the police get no action as the RTP can not handle this type of crime

Despite the enactment of the new Domestic Violence Victim Protection Act of 2007, it still falls short in providing adequate safeguards for those enduring abuse within their homes, and without a attitude change nothing will happen  Thai men still think women are 2nd class and they are God !! but in reality they are cowards and small minded people  with no idea how the world works  and should be ashamed if they hit woman

The article I read talked about domestic violence, which members here took to mean solely woman beating. It cuts both ways. There's no shortage of violent women here.  Hell, even the teachers are free to open a can of whoop-ass on children as young as 6, not to mention the carnal interference that is far more traumatising than a poke in the chops.   It boils down to a lack of respect for the rights of others and that needs to be addressed at a societal level.

One of the problems here, although not the main one, is a lack of education. Frustrated little boys almost always grow up to be frustrated men, therefore take out their frustrations on the weaker member of the partnership. When the problem cannot be rationally analysed, lashing out is often the result.

Well stated...tragic but true!
