Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old Thai-Myanmar man on Koh Tao after he allegedly attempted to sexually assault a 22-year-old Canadian tourist in the early hours of 13 November 2025. The victim, identified as Julia, was returning to her accommodation around 01:00, when she was approached by a man posing as a free motorcycle taxi driver. The arrest has prompted increased security monitoring on the island as police examine the suspect’s movements and actions.

Police said the man diverted from the main road into a dark pathway, where he attempted to grope her and remove his trousers. Julia reported that she jumped from the moving motorcycle, suffering a fall before the suspect pursued and briefly straddled her. She was able to call for help using her phone, which the man then seized before she escaped to a main road and took a taxi back to the bar she had visited earlier.

Julia received treatment at Koh Tao Hospital for abrasions and later filed a formal complaint with local police. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the route, circulated images of the suspect and reconstructed the sequence of events to support the investigation. Officers also monitored ferry piers and other possible exit routes from Koh Tao in case the suspect attempted to flee the island.

Authorities located the man at around 09:00 on 13 November near a warehouse parking area where he had been hiding. Police said a urine test indicated a positive result for methamphetamine, and during questioning he admitted to the assault and to borrowing a motorcycle to carry it out. Officers recovered the victim’s phone along with the clothing the suspect wore during the incident.

Khoasod reported that the man has been taken into custody and handed over to investigators for prosecution. Police stated that evidence collected from the scene and CCTV analysis will form part of the case file submitted to prosecutors. Officers are continuing to review the suspect’s background and possible links to other offences as the investigation progresses.
