When they find out you can speak Thai..

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever noticed this?

When dining out or wetting one's beak in a tourist ghetto, the servers suddenly change from all smiles to all scowls once they know you can speak Thai? and another thing, when you take a normal office girl out for lunch, everyone in said ghettos presumes that the girl is a bar girl.. I have in the past literally had taxi drivers shout out to my normal girlfriend at the time in Thai 'how much?'....

It's very strange behavior.

Even stranger is when you meet a farang in a bar who claims to have been living here for 40 years, and yet still can't speak a word of Thai, and gets embarrassed and a bit flustered when he knows I can...

Does anyone know the psychology behind it? And before anyone has a go at me - Yes, I do spend a considerable amount of my time around tourist ghettos, and no, I have absolutely no desire to spend my time rotting away in Nakhon Nowhere counting my coin collection.

Most Thais can tell the difference after a few sentences.

Very much so.

More so when you start joking with his Thai WAG and she starts laughing and the buffalo gets all paranoid.

Nearly always.

They prefer strong looking farangs that speak Thai.

The problem with non Thai speakers is that they keep speaking English to the Thais even if it is obvious they do not understand English thinking somehow if they keep repeating it that the Thai will suddenly miraculously understand.

Also the non Thai speakers will start using hand gestures and body movements making them look like a complete idiot.

Then the farang will spit the dummy when the Thai doesn’t understand them and declare that Thais are stupid.

hmmmm..

There's quite a lot to unpack here!

Being that there are hundreds, if not thousands of languages around the world - do you consider it incumbent on the farang to learn the local lingo of a place that they will only be visiting for 2 weeks??

(This goes for anywhere, Nigeria, Nepal, Afghanistan etc...)

As English is the dominant global language then I personally consider it incumbent on all locals in all countries to get their English levels up to scratch!

The ones who get upset that you understand Thai are the ones who are out to scam you..and yes most think that the girl  must be  for hire if she is with a foreigner ( probably 90 % its true anyway) until they realise you can speak Thai then the  opinion often changes

( but not always)

No - In social settings with Thais, speaking the language - even imperfectly or at a fairly simple level - has almost always been met with a positive response.

It’s true that some claim on these forums that, in certain situations, such as bars, local women might react negatively when foreigners speak Thai because it signals that they aren’t naïve and can’t be easily taken advantage of. Personally, I find this notion to be a ridiculous myth, likely propagated by those who don’t speak Thai and are trying to justify their own ignorance.

Anyone who's been here for any length of Time can easily identify a working girl.

Every Thai (the vast majority) can also very easily identify a working girl.

Its only the newbies who are blissfully unware that everyone knows the 'honey on their arm' is brass.

I see it in shopping malls in Bangkok - the perfectly normal couples, well suited, well matched... then we see another 'one of two scenarios' - a) The obvious hooker with her latest sponsor or b) The occupational Farang Hunters - a step up from the hooker, but nonetheless, the sort who 'only date foreigners' and wish to elevate their 'security and socio-economic status...    (of course thats an over simplification - but the basics are there).

So, Eric - if people are shouting out 'how much' - its because though while you might not know it - others can easily see that on your harm hangs a bit a brass  - sorry mate - thats just the way it - you'll 'get your eye in' at some point maybe.

Yep - that would be natural - people who have not learned Thai get embarrased - understandibly.

I met a lad (when travelling overseas) - we ended up chatting and found out he also lived in Thailand - I was with my Son and we all spoke, then he asked if my Son speaks Thai and spoke to him in Thai - this lads Thai was excellent - he'd only been there for 2 years !....  I was a little embarrased given the Time if been in Thailand - my Thai should be perfect by now.

Eric.

The phscyology - you're hanging around with girls who (it appears) the locals think are hookers.

You are conversing with those of a lower socio-economic who appear not to like the idea that you speak Thai because they may want to take advantage of you (I'm guessing this occurs in a bar setting).

Other foreigners may be embarrassed that your Thai is better than theres - thats normal I think - though I suspect they should be complimenting you and highlighting that its impressive that you know Thai so well.
