A former national gold-medal science student has been arrested after stealing a pickup truck, fleeing police and crashing into two women in Ubon Ratchathani, killing one and seriously injuring the other. The incident occurred on 22 November in the Jang Sawang community on the Det Udom–Boondarik Road, where the suspect’s vehicle struck a motorcycle carrying 59-year-old Kongsi Srisuphan and her daughter, 27-year-old Saowalak Srisuphan. Kongsi later died at the district hospital, while Saowalak was rushed to Sapphasitthiprasong Hospital in critical condition.

Police found the black Vigo pickup, registration from Amnat Charoen, overturned after hitting a streetlight and smashing into a flower shop and nearby homes, causing over 500,000 baht in damage. The driver, 18-year-old Sukkasem Srimongkol, was detained at the scene and appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Officers said a drug test confirmed he had taken five methamphetamine pills before the crash.

Investigators later learned that the truck had been stolen the previous evening, 21 November, from an automotive air-conditioning repair shop in Boondarik district, where Sukkasem had once worked. CCTV footage captured him taking the vehicle, prompting officers to search his home, though he could not be found. The following morning, a 191 patrol spotted him driving the stolen pickup and attempted to stop him, but he accelerated away until a tyre burst, leading to the fatal collision.

At Det Udom Police Station, Sukkasem reportedly showed signs of drug intoxication, prompting officers to place him in a holding cell to calm down. His mother, 54-year-old La-ongdao, who has cancer and relies on him as the family’s main income earner, arrived in tears upon learning he had caused a fatal crash and could face a long prison sentence. When brought out briefly to speak with her, Sukkasem refused to engage and told her, “I won’t die easily,” before being returned to his cell.

Flower shop owner Inthira Malasai, 23, described seeing police chasing the pickup moments before hearing what she thought was a gunshot or tyre explosion, followed by the truck ploughing into the motorcycle and then into her shop. She said she was unharmed only because she had crossed the road moments earlier. The shop owner of the repair garage, 38-year-old Sukanya Supap, said she had once supported Sukkasem because he was a formerly gifted student from a poor family, but he later fell into drug use and stopped coming to work.

The Manager Online reported that police have charged Sukkasem with reckless driving causing death, property damage and the use of a Category 1 drug. He has confessed to all allegations. Investigators at Huai Kha–Boondarik Police Station are now seeking a court-approved arrest warrant for the truck theft and will transfer him for further legal action.
