The Third Army Region has tightened security along the Mae Sot border after a 60 mm explosive shell from intensifying clashes in Myanmar landed in a Thai village on 22 November, damaging four homes and a vehicle. The incident prompted a rapid on-site inspection by Lt Gen Worathep Boonnya, the Third Army Commander, alongside Tak Governor Chusak Rooying and security agencies. No injuries were reported, but authorities warned of escalating risks as heavy fighting continued just one kilometre from the border.

Tensions flared when Myanmar military forces launched a major assault with heavy weapons against resistance fighters in the Nila Pan area of Myawaddy, directly opposite Ban Mai Mae Kon Ken, Village 2, Tha Sai Luat subdistrict, Mae Sot district. The cross-border shell fell in nearby Village 4, exploding in a vegetable garden and sending debris into surrounding homes. Windows shattered, walls were perforated, power lines were cut and a pickup truck was struck by shrapnel.

Following the blast, Lt Gen Worathep ordered the Ratchamanu Task Force to fire a single 120 mm smoke round across the border as a warning. Despite the signal, fighting continued on the Myanmar side with heavy weapons and machine guns, forcing Thai security units to reinforce positions along the Mae Kon Ken borderline. Officials said the response followed established engagement rules, escalating from light to heavy only if necessary.

Lt Gen Worathep noted that cross-border rounds have occurred several times in recent months and have been repeatedly raised with Myanmar through the Thai–Myanmar Border Committee. He confirmed that a shell had earlier landed in Ban Ta Yai on the same morning, prompting swift reporting to the Army Commander-in-Chief and approval for the warning shot. Thai authorities requested Myanmar forces to prevent any further ammunition from crossing into Thai territory.

Security forces, including the Ratchamanu Task Force, Ranger Company 35, Mae Sot district officials, Border Patrol Police Company 346 and Mae Sot police, have since been deployed extensively to protect the border. Agencies are also monitoring developments inside Myanmar as fighting intensifies near civilian areas. A total of 125 Myanmar nationals have already fled across the border into safe zones in Mae Sot, where officials are providing humanitarian assistance.

SiamRath reported that authorities said the security posture will remain heightened as they continue to track the conflict and maintain communication channels with Myanmar counterparts.
