A man attempting to stop a drunken disturbance in Khon Kaen on 27 November ultimately became responsible for the death of the intoxicated individual he confronted. CCTV footage from a home in Soi Thaphra Naow, Moo 6, Thaphra subdistrict, Mueang Khon Kaen, captured the victim, 38-year-old Sarawut Maksuk, driving his black pickup at high speed, revving loudly and repeatedly moving forward and reversing for nearly 10 minutes before assaulting a neighbour and blocking access to homes. When 46-year-old Somkiat Promdee stepped outside to intervene, he struck Sarawut, who later died from his injuries.

The footage showed Sarawut exiting his vehicle shirtless, shouting provocations and insults at residents in the soi after earlier grabbing a neighbour by the neck. Somkiat, who had been resting inside his home, came out after hearing the prolonged engine revving and commotion. He delivered an elbow strike followed by a punch, causing Sarawut to fall and later kicked him three times, according to the police investigation.

Pol Col Prateep Panyowat, superintendent of Thaphra Police Station, said officers responded after a report via the 191 centre of a man revving a vehicle loudly near a Bangchak petrol station on Mittraphap Road. Police arrived to find Sarawut unconscious on the roadside with blood over neck and mouth, and transported him to Sirindhorn Hospital, where he died shortly afterwards. Investigators confirmed Somkiat admitted to elbowing, punching, and kicking Sarawut but claimed he only intended to stop the disturbance, not cause death.

Daily News reported that police later detained Somkiat at his home and charged him with causing death through assault. After being taken for a crime-scene reenactment, he was remanded to the Khon Kaen Provincial Court, where investigators opposed bail at the police-station level. The court subsequently granted him temporary release on a cash bail of 15,000 baht and further judicial consideration of penalties now awaits.
