A 56-year-old man has been arrested in Udon Thani after fatally striking his younger brother with a wooden pestle during a confrontation reportedly triggered by a dispute over money from the sale of family land. Police at Chaiwan station took Kamollet, a resident of Chaiwan district, into custody on 27 November after his brother, 50-year-old Chaiwat, died in hospital two days after the incident. The assault occurred at the family home at 18:30 on 23 November and the victim was initially taken to Chaiwan Hospital before being transferred to Udon Thani Hospital, where he died on 25 November.

The case was first reported on 26 November by Patcharee, 50, who told police she believed the victim had been assaulted, despite relatives initially claiming he had fallen in an accident. Concerned that her husband may not receive justice, she contacted investigators to request a full inquiry. This prompted Pol Col Ratponchai Phensongkram, superintendent of Chaiwan police, to order an immediate review of all circumstances.

Investigators visited the scene at Ban Pa Kao on 26 November, where the victim’s funeral rites were under way. Officers questioned Kamollet and seized his mobile phone for examination. On 27 November, police formed a working group to analyse evidence, including a voice message found on the phone indicating Kamollet had been involved in a fight with the victim on the day of the incident.

Following further questioning, Kamollet admitted to striking his brother during what he described as an act of self-defence. He claimed Chaiwat, who had been drinking, became angry after asking their mother for money from the sale of her inherited land and receiving an answer he disliked. According to officers, Chaiwat then attempted to attack his mother with a rubber-tapping knife, prompting Kamollet to intervene.

Police said Kamollet told officers that Chaiwat slashed at him first, injuring his abdomen, leading him to grab a wooden pestle nearby and strike Chaiwat twice, with one blow landing heavily on his head. After realising the severity of the injuries, he sought help and called for rescue services. Chaiwat later died from his injuries despite receiving treatment.

Daily News reported that Pol Col Ratponchai confirmed that the brothers lived in the same house and had a long-standing good family relationship, making the incident particularly distressing for relatives and neighbours. He said the initial claim of an accidental fall was inconsistent with medical findings and the recovered voice message, which became key evidence in the case. Officers concluded that the death resulted from an assault rather than an accident, with police proceeding with legal charges.

That's one hell of a pestle!  I had visions of a raging pharmacist who'd been dipping into his own product until that thing was wielded.
