Thailand’s last hunter-gatherers fight for land ownership

Featured Replies

I found this interesting. Mods can move to correct forum if this is wrong.

As the video states, the long-tested solution (in Thailand) is to allow use of land and give temporary residence rights without ownership and with prohibitions on hunting, land-clearing etc. (all those categories allowing residence less than chanote) There are "community forest" schemes as well. So, there are two possible solutions. A third solution is for the authorities to allow them to continue their way of life without excessive intervention. However, once the land has been designated as a national park, that can be hard to undo. It seems this is the case. So, the likelihood of the government just gifting them National Park land with full chanote ownership is very slim to nil.

The populations are tiny by the way.

I think this what they do with the hill tribes. None of that land is deeded  yet they allow them to keep within their limits and maintain the villages and fields they have. I don't think they could expand though.

Hill tribes clear cut forests though and personally I think they're responsible for annual forest fires in the north. Hunter gatherers are less intrusive so I don't see having much problems with them.

Where is all the forest wildlife in Thailand? I've never seen anything more than maybe a squirrel if I'm lucky. Everything has been hunted anywhere there are people so that damage has already been done.

What was the language that the Maniq leader was speaking a minute into the video?  It was neither Bangkok Thai nor Southern Thai.  Yawi? (probably not).

Anyone know?

She's just speaking Thai in a very thick accent and not very clearly.

It is actually fairly clearly understandable southern Thai, if one gets used to his mumbling.

No, the man!  I can clearly understand the woman.  Listen to the seated man at about 1 minute 20 seconds.

@simon43

There is clearly some Thai e.g. ปลูกผัก in what he says. I have never lived in the South and I am aware people from Bangkok can find it unintelligible. Perhaps that is what is happening to me here.

Alternatively it could be a mix of his native language with Thai loan words.

Over to the people who live in the South.

(The female was very clear central Thai. This immediately made me think it was school-learnt and she spoke a non-Tai language within her community.)

Thai with heavy accent. Definately not Geordie.

When I first came to Thailand 40 plus years ago there were other similar tribes living in the jungles further north. Their features were more African than Asian , similar to some of the people you see in Madagasgar , where there is a definite Afro Asian appearance. No idea what happened to them.

Perhaps similar to Moken (sea gypsies).....

OK i just listened to him again and there's definitely Thai words in there but it's totally incomprehensible to me as a whole. I maybe it's extremely sloppy Thai mixed in with some other language. Indians do this with English actually. Hill tribes in Thailand also mix in Thai here and there when they talk I've noticed.

The hill tribe hunted them to extinction. That was according to a hill tribe woman at least. She said they were little 4 foot tall things running around the jungles. I bet they were fighting and stealing too but that's just a guess.

Absolutely, though should it be given it back to the caveman or the cave neanderthal?
