US President Donald Trump has sparked anger with his comments about Somali immigrants, saying he doesn't want them in the US and describing them as "garbage." During a cabinet meeting, Trump remarked that they should "go back to where they came from," criticising Somalia's lack of structure.

 

His comments coincide with reported plans for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Minnesota, aimed at deporting individuals from the state's large Somali community.

 

Minnesota's leaders have reacted sharply, warning that such actions could mistakenly target US citizens. The Twin Cities, composed of Minneapolis and St Paul, host the largest Somali community in America. Critics argue the planned ICE operation could unjustly affect residents who are legally in the country. Trump has frequently clashed with Representative Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American in Congress, calling her "incompetent" and claiming she "hates everybody."

 

ICE, directed by the Trump administration, intends to focus on undocumented Somali immigrants in the Twin Cities. An insider reports that the operation could target hundreds in the coming week. ICE officials assert that their operations prioritise legal status over race or ethnicity. However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey warned that such operations could breach due process.

 

Trump’s administration has intensified its immigration policies following a recent incident in Washington DC. After a suspect from Afghanistan was charged with a deadly attack on National Guard members, Trump announced plans to end the Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minnesota. According to Senator Mohamed's statement he knows that some Somalis are illegal, and he can only know that by knowing who they are.

I am from MN, and they are mostly undesirables. Scammed my state out of millions on top of all that they were given to them for free for a start up. The biggest problem with them is they refuse to assimilate. They want to change everything to their way of life. They destroyed the quality of life in Minneapolis. And as a Minneapolis born native I can strongly attest to this.

Im not outraged. Time for them to go somewhere else.

There may well be some truth in their scamming the state. Some Somalis have done the same thing in the UK, women claiming their husband is a brother and they are single mums. Get more benefits that way. 

But those in public office like Trump have no right to use terms like garbage which incite racial hatred.

Let local officials investigate and if evidence is found, then prosecute the offenders, exposing the deception.

Wasn't Ilhan Omah the one who referred to the 2001 Twin Towers terror attack dismissively as "some people did something"?

As much as I dislike the presence of Somalis in the US and hope to see as many as possible  deported and denaturalized, I believe this is just more empty bellowing. Primarily, I think, he's trying to move the spotlight off H1B and L-1 Indians and the tidal wave of job stealing they're engaged in. The Somalis are at least isolated in one state for the most part, while Indians and Pakistanis are everywhere.
