Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul takes a proactive step by forming a special committee to address Thailand’s recurring flood issues, drawing lessons from the devastating floods of 2011 and this year. The committee, featuring over 30 members, aims to devise strategies to mitigate future disasters and swiftly aid affected regions.

Anutin issued an order on 1st December to establish this committee, highlighting severe flood damage in central Thailand, particularly in Songkhla. The committee, chaired by Anutin, will reflect on how flooding in different regions, exacerbated by climate change, could cause future devastation, thereby necessitating robust preventive measures.

The committee includes deputy prime ministers, secretaries from various ministries, and other key officials. Their responsibilities cover studying past flood events, particularly in Hat Yai District, and suggesting preventive methods including warning systems, disaster relief, and public preparedness. This initiative also involves benchmarking against effective international flood prevention and mitigation practices.

The committee is tasked with completing its study within three months, producing a report for the Cabinet’s approval. The approved measures will be integrated into Thailand's national disaster prevention and mitigation plan, with strategies then shared with the public to enhance flood preparedness, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Over 30-member committee to tackle flood issues, chaired by Anutin.
  • Focus on learning from floods in 2011 and 2023, enhancing future readiness.
  • Report due in three months; recommendations to feed into national strategy.

firstly, Thai authorities and the term proactive should never be in the same sentence. secondly, if they didn't learn from 2011, they still haven't learn crap!

Let´s say it clear. If they haven´t learned from 2011 yet, they will not stand much chance to start learning.

I live in a cyclone prone area in Australia, I get prepared for cyclones 2 months before the season starts, not a day before they arrive.

Man is he slow, the new issue is PM2.5, when does he plan to handle that, sometime in April?

20 or 30 truckloads of cash and gold stashed overseas should do the job.

I did the same when in Cairns and Townsville.

The annual new flood committee, which will achieve the same results as the previous flood committees - zero.

Because there is nothing more proactive than "forming a special committee."

Every year a new "committee" and new members all waiting in line at the trough (Taxpayer funded), fancy hotels, food, and conveyances for them and their families, rinse and repeat next year. Don't expect anything to come from these committees though, except a lot of happy high-end hotels/restaurants, and fat/pampered MP's.
