Roman Empire Introduced Domestic Cats to Europe ~2000 Years Ago

A groundbreaking new genetic study reveals that domestic cats reached Europe only around 2,000 years ago — during the early days of the Roman Empire — overturning the long-held belief that cats spread with Neolithic farmers 6,000–7,000 years ago.

Previously discovered cat remains from Neolithic and Bronze Age European settlements — dating back thousands of years — have now been genetically identified as wildcats, not the domestic variety.

The research team sequenced ancient DNA from 70 feline remains, spanning 10,000 BCE to the 19th century, gathered from 97 archaeological sites across Europe and the Near East. Their findings show that true domestic cats — descendants of North African wildcats — first appeared in Europe around the first century CE.

The spread of these cats across the continent closely followed Roman trade and military routes. As Roman armies and grain ships moved from North Africa and the Mediterranean into mainland Europe and Britain, cats traveled with them — likely valued for their rodent-hunting skills aboard ships and in army camps.

Interestingly, the study also identifies two distinct introduction waves: the first, around 2,200 years ago, involved wildcats arriving in places like Sardinia; the second, roughly two centuries later, brought the ancestors of modern domestic cats that would spread across Europe.

In short: our modern house cats likely owe their European presence to sailors and soldiers of the Roman Empire — not to early farmers as once believed.

Key Takeaways

Modern domestic cats first arrived in Europe roughly 2,000 years ago, during the Roman Empire.

Genetic analysis shows earlier feline remains in Europe belonged to wildcats, not domestic cats.

The spread of cats across Europe followed Roman trade and military routes from North Africa.

BCE and CE is not re-writing history.

What is the earliest known sandbox?

(These days, in modern times, termed litter box. Litter is everywhere, these days.)

I think that evolution could make cats an advanced species on our level

Roman seems to get blamed for almost everything, these days.

Even the death of John Lennon.

SATANG....you cat.....where are you?

Imagine all the cats....

I wonder if you can.

Imagine all the cats.

No matter how many BILLIONS of years....

Evolution will NEVER make cats into primates.

Evolution just does not work this way.

You might need to go back many millions of years to find a common ancestor.

Is there a missing link between humans and cats?

Yes, of course.

Kim.

Why does one need to be a primate to successfully evolve into an "intelligent" species.?

Although I will say that the restricted diet would have to evolve too.

I never said that primates were an intelligent species.

Only you implied this suspect connection.

It is, which is why you use it.

What makes you think they haven't evolved well past our level?
We treat them like Gods, allow them free reign, feed them, clean their sh!t every day, just so they will occasionally rub up against our leg or sit on the sofa next to us!
How many humans do we give this same attention?

Mine seems to be genetically bred to look cute and sleep, with occasionally midnight murders of some poor critters whose carcasses are strewn across the kitchen floor in the morning.

Humans are unreliable.

Animals stay next to you forever.

even after thousands of years of being domesticated, seems they have not lost their instincts to be predators.

it's debatable whether they should ever have been domesticated in the first place. maybe they prefer being out there hunting than being fed kibbles and bits.

What did the Romans ever do for us?

Plumbing and sanitation

The calendar

Paved roads

Public baths

Underfloor heating ...

and now cats!

The calendar

And the calendar makes no sense.

The "new year" should be the first day of Spring, NOT in the middle of winter.

The Egyptians worshipped cats 3,000 years ago. I suppose that doesn't count.

Or, stated another way:

You make MORE nonsense than usual.

(Still, this only YOUR opinion, and not mine.)

Also, sometimes, more nonsense is NOT less sense, as everyone knows.
