GUADALCANAL: Or, “how I discovered the meaning of life”…

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment was once my favorite book.

It was my favorite book until recently when I happened to read the book by Lt. Col. John B. George.

If you really want to know, there is no need to read Catcher in the Rye; just read, instead, Shots Fired in Anger.

What does life really boil down to?

George, not TV’s George, answers this question beautifully and simply in his great book, published long ago, sometime around 1947.

The world has not changed and life has not changed.

This book, which tells tales of China, Burma and India, explains to any simpleton the real meaning of life, as Dostoevsky only tried to do.

The lesson is clear: If you want to know the meaning of life, then become a rifleman.

This is really quite an amazing book in many ways.

After reading this book, I learned that:

One should always keep one’s gun well oiled and in working order.

One never can tell when one might be called upon to use it, at a moment’s notice.

Great book.

Reminds one of the good old days.

Best regards,

Gamma

Note:  If I can easily find this ePub book, then you can too.

It is always fascinating to watch you present these grand revelations about life as if you have cracked some eternal code, when all you have really done is wander into yet another random book and declared it the new key to existence. It's like watching a man convince himself that every shiny object he finds in the bargain bin at a garage sale is the Rosetta Stone of human experience.

Meaning of life is not a discovery it's what you invent for yourself ... IMHO

It clearly doesn't seem to be working very well. Have you tried upping the percentage to 99.9%?

I would try 99.999%. That should nail it.

Would it be possible for anyone to get in touch with JINGTHING, and ask him if it might be possible for me to ....

RETIRE...to...

Guadalcanal?

After reading this book I mentioned,

I am thinking....

I might like to live completely alone...

in the Jungle....

Like a Jap I once knew of.

He did quite well, living alone.....

UNDISCOVERED, for many years, after WW2

Sounds like the perfect life for me, in fact.

Note:  This is not just an idle thought of mine.

I am picturing myself in the pristine environment, with those beautiful waters, among the ruins of WW2

Go for it, definitely! Who's going to even notice you are gone?

Well...

For sure....

YOU would notice, for one.

Not sure about anyone else, of course....

Good point, I'd be absolutely heartbroken. Completely shipwrecked.

Great song, though.

Good Point!

Or, approximately, as it should actually sound....

Actually, on second thought, this might not work out too well for you. Imagine you runoff into the jungle with nothing more than your toga and an anal vibrator and you no longer have access to being able to talk to yourself on AN? Then what? Surely you have to consider this big downside risk.

You are right. Disappear into the jungle. Never start another topic on AN. Just you and the mosquitos. Pure bliss. Send us a postcard, at least?

In all honesty, actually, if you would only provide me with your address,...

I would be most happy to send you a postcard, right now.

You want one?

Yes, I do want one, that is very kind of you.

At the moment I am still stuck at the Trat Bus Terminal, still trying to reach the airport in Bangkok.

Can you just please it to me here? I will be here for possibly another week, or maybe even much longer, so a postcard from you would be delightful!
