The Karen Border Guard Force (BGF) transferred 278 Chinese nationals, identified as victims of scam networks, to Chinese authorities on December 4, 2025, marking a major step in ongoing cross-border operations against organised fraud. The handover involved coordination between the BGF, Myanmar immigration officers, Myawaddy police, and Karen forces, before the group was delivered to representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Thailand. All individuals were then transported across the Thai–Myanmar Friendship Bridge II in Mae Sot for screening by Thai agencies.

Thai provincial units in Tak, including the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Immigration officers, public health officials, military personnel and district authorities, conducted health and identity checks. After screening, the group was moved to Mae Sot International Airport to continue their journey back to China. The transfer forms part of a broader repatriation process linked to intensified operations around the border region.

The group originated from Shwe Kokko, opposite Ban Wang Kaew in Mae Pa subdistrict, Mae Sot district and from locations in Myawaddy. Their handover follows escalated military pressure in the area, including raids and demolitions targeting Chinese-backed scam compounds. Similar transfers earlier in the week saw the total number of Chinese nationals repatriated by Thailand, between December 1 and December 4, 2025, to 1,171.

The operation reflects growing regional cooperation to dismantle transnational scam networks centred in Shwe Kokko, an area long associated with illicit online fraud operations. Myanmar military units and their Karen allies have recently launched heavy offensives against these criminal enclaves, drawing international attention. Thai agencies have also increased cross-border coordination to prevent trafficking, forced labour and illegal detention linked to such compounds.

Amarin reported that authorities expect further transfers as investigations continue and more victims are located within conflict zones. Regional law-enforcement bodies have indicated that repatriation efforts may accelerate as military control expands over previously inaccessible compounds. The return of the 278 Chinese nationals is likely to prompt additional scrutiny of cross-border criminal operations and the movements of trafficked persons in the coming weeks.

I have to wonder just how forced this labour is.

Need to question everything.
