Mongkol Chunlatas, senior chairman of the Ubon Ratchathani Chamber of Commerce, reported artillery fire following border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia. The conflict, which has resulted in at least one Thai soldier's death, intensified around 1 am in Nam Yuen district. Residents have heard exchanges of fire, and both sides have mobilized military forces near the border.

On December 7, 2025, residents were advised to move away from the border as security forces positioned artillery closer. By the next morning, the combat became audible, signaling extensive preparations from both countries. Mongkol believes this confrontation could be more destructive than previous ones, as weapons have been strategically moved closer, raising civilian anxiety.

The Cambodian forces appear to have specific targets, and Thai operations are expected to proceed over the coming days. Approximately 75% of border locals have been evacuated, significantly impacting the local economy. Mongkol expressed the desire for a more assertive Thai response to quickly resolve the situation.

Veerasak Pisanuwong, from the Surin Chamber of Commerce, noted clashes heard from 7 am on December 8, 2025, with fighting deeper into Thai territory. Evacuations have been underway since December 7, of 60-70% of residents from border areas. The situation, disrupting the high season economy, has led to numerous hotel cancellations, though city centers remain unaffected and ready for visitors, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Border confrontations persist with artillery exchanges.
  • Major evacuations impact local populations and economies.
  • Thai operations are planned to intensify in the coming days.
