Dozens injured after magnitude 7.5 quake strikes northern Japan

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck north-eastern Japan on Monday, injuring at least 30 people and prompting the evacuation of thousands. The quake, occurring at 23:15 local time, led to tsunami warnings with waves reaching 70cm, although these warnings have now been lifted. Power outages affected approximately 2,700 homes, and some train services have been halted.

This earthquake happened 80 km off the coast of the Aomori region at a depth of 50 km. Japan, which sits on the Ring of Fire, is known for its frequent seismic activity, experiencing around 1,500 earthquakes annually. Authorities issued evacuation orders for about 90,000 residents and warned of potential aftershocks, urging high alert for a week.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi advised residents to prepare for further tremors by securing furniture and being ready to evacuate if necessary. A response office was set up by the Japanese government, tasked with assessing damage and implementing emergency measures. The chief cabinet secretary, Minoru Kihara, confirmed ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Tohoku Electric Power reported no issues at its nuclear plants, and no irregularities were found at the Fukushima site, devastated by a quake in 2011. Experts highlight Japan's vulnerability, with recent predictions suggesting a significant earthquake could hit the Nankai Trough within 30 years. Past Nankai Trough earthquakes have resulted in numerous fatalities, underscoring the region's seismic risk.

Looking forward, Japanese authorities continue to monitor the situation, focusing on safety and recovery efforts. Residents are advised to stay prepared for more aftershocks in the coming days.

Key Takeaways

  • A magnitude 7.5 earthquake injured 30, affected power, and halted trains.
  • Authorities have warned of aftershocks and urged preparedness.
  • Japan's seismic risk is heightened due to its location on the Ring of Fire.
