In a significant military manoeuvre, Thailand's Second Army Region announced the destruction of five Cambodian military targets on December 8. Among these operations, the recapture of the Prasat Khana ancient temple stood out as a major victory. However, there are fears that Cambodian forces may retaliate with BM-21 rocket attacks on civilian areas overnight.

The Thai military operations were meticulously planned, adhering to security practices and international law, with a strong emphasis on minimising civilian impacts. Tensions escalated as Cambodian forces were observed mobilising heavy equipment and preparing for potential aggression. This prompted decisive actions by the Thai military to neutralise potential threats and ensure regional stability.

Significant operations included demolishing a building used by scammers, removing an anti-drone post, and taking strategic control of Prasat Khana. As tensions flared, fighting led to the tragic death of a Thai soldier and injuries to 18 others. Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Winthai Suwaree provided this update amidst the heightened conflict along the border.

The Thai government, through spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat, asserted that Cambodian forces initiated the use of heavy weaponry. This resulted in injuries and the death of a Thai soldier, prompting a defensive response from Thailand. The deployment of fighter aircraft was strictly a defensive measure, aligned with international rules of engagement in such conflicts.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) announced that flights continue to operate normally despite the border situation. They are closely working with security agencies to manage airspace safely, highlighting precautions taken to ensure aviation security. CAAT's coordination ensures that aviation operations remain unaffected by the conflict at the border, reported Thai Newsroom.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thailand destroyed five Cambodian military targets, heightening border tensions.
  • The conflict has resulted in one Thai soldier's death and raised fears of Cambodian rocket attacks.
  • Flights remain operational, with CAAT collaborating on safety measures.
