MMDA Urges Commuters to Use Mass Transit Amid Holiday Jams

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has urged commuters to utilize mass transportation systems to alleviate severe traffic congestion in Metro Manila during the festive period. With vehicle numbers soaring on roads like EDSA, traffic jams have intensified due to the influx of holiday shoppers and revelers.

The MMDA's call comes as vehicle volume has surged to about 450,000 on EDSA, far exceeding its designed capacity of 250,000. MMDA Chairman Don Artes highlighted this in a recent briefing, underscoring the elevated congestion levels during this time of year. As part of their response, the MMDA is collaborating with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to extend the operational hours of Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems.

“This is aimed at encouraging the public not to use their private vehicles,” Artes explained, suggesting this strategy will help mitigate the congestion crisis. Additionally, the MMDA is intensifying clearing operations on Mabuhay Lanes, alternative routes designated to divert traffic away from clogged main roads like EDSA.

To further combat the traffic woes, the agency has sought cooperation from mall operators, requesting them to avoid organizing mall-wide sales during peak holiday hours. Such measures aim to reduce unnecessary congestion and encourage a shift toward public transit options.

Looking ahead, the MMDA will continue evaluating the effectiveness of these initiatives and make ongoing adjustments as needed. The agency's efforts reflect a broader strategy to manage urban congestion during one of the busiest times of the year.

Key Takeaways

  • MMDA is urging mass transit use to relieve Metro Manila traffic.
  • Vehicle numbers on EDSA have exceeded capacity, causing jams.
  • Extended train hours and alternative routes are part of the strategy.
