Thailand has formally appealed to the UN Security Council, requesting intervention over alleged aggressive actions by Cambodia. In a letter dated December 9, Bangkok accuses Cambodia of hostile acts that have threatened Thai territorial sovereignty and the safety of its citizens, calling for Cambodia to halt its provocations and accept full responsibility.

Thailand's Permanent Representative to the UN, Cherdchai Chaivaivid, highlighted a series of incidents beginning on December 7, when Thai soldiers were allegedly fired upon by Cambodian forces while conducting maintenance in Kantharalak District. This confrontation reportedly resulted in injuries to two Thai soldiers. Subsequently, the situation intensified with accusations of an unprovoked assault on a Thai military base in Ubon Ratchathani, followed by widespread attacks affecting several provinces.

By December 8, the alleged attacks had expanded, impacting provinces including Buriram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani, leading to one death and multiple injuries. Reports indicate over 400,000 residents were forced to evacuate, with two evacuees reportedly succumbing to heart attacks during the evacuation process. Thailand denounced these acts as "disproportionate and unlawful," citing the use of heavy weaponry and claiming deliberate targeting of civilians.

Thailand argues these actions violate Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits force against another state's territorial integrity. In response, Thailand asserts its right to self-defence under Article 51, highlighting that its measures are proportionate and aim to minimise civilian impact.

The letter accuses Cambodian officials of spreading false narratives to misrepresent the incidents and diminish Thailand's international standing. It outlines previous alleged violations, including the planting of landmines and prior attacks on Thai territory, in breach of a Joint Declaration signed in October.

Thailand strongly condemns the actions as aggressive, and it fears they jeopardise diplomatic agreements, deteriorate trust, and escalate tensions in the region. The letter demands Cambodia provide a comprehensive explanation and implement measures to avoid future incidents, urging the Security Council and international community to address the situation urgently.

The Thai mission has requested the letter be shared with all Security Council members to draw prompt attention to the matter.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thailand accuses Cambodia of hostile military actions and breaches of sovereignty.
  • Alleged incidents resulted in multiple injuries and large-scale evacuations within Thailand.
  • Thailand calls on the UN Security Council for urgent intervention and resolution.

And did they ask their opinion too about the rocket attack on the casino and 67 dead Cambodians??

And did they also explain why Thailand does not recognize the border since 1907 although Thailand lost every case to rewrite the border?

Seems they like to pick and choose regarding the UN.

Hehe i agree... Also, on the one hand news is saying the Army generals have say in what happens with this. The government has no say and must support what the generals say. So, to have them contact the UN when clearly they are impeding on the world courts decision about where the line is drawn. Seems like they are simply trying to support what they tell their people about who attacks who first and who initiated this dispute.
