The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) in Thailand is set to investigate complaints against a local affiliate of Tools for Humanity, which engaged in iris scanning to verify digital identities in exchange for World cryptocurrency. This project, involving over 1.2 million Thai citizens, may have violated the Computer Crime Act by introducing potentially false information into computer systems. The iris data collection has also sparked privacy and security concerns among Thai authorities.

The investigation focuses on Orb iris-scanning devices used to confirm human identity, rewarding participants with World (WLD) tokens. Authorities are collaborating with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo) and international experts to examine differences in technology and the possible exploitation of biometric data. Concerns are heightened by Singapore's decision not to proceed with similar projects, raising further questions about handling Thai citizens’ biometric information.

The DSI is looking into links between Prime Opportunity Fund and cryptocurrency firms, suspecting possible data misuse without public disclosure. The collected iris data, analogous to DNA for identity verification, brings critical privacy implications. This has led to intensified scrutiny on security practices associated with the project and its affiliates.

In connection with this, the Digital Economy (DE) and Society Ministry has canceled a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Prime Opportunity Fund due to suspicions of a global money laundering link. DE Minister Chaichanok Chidchob announced the cancellation of the MoU, which was hastily drafted and signed in March 2024. The agreement aimed to establish a Thailand International Digital and Financial Centre (TIDC) but was found to be associated with potentially unlawful activities.

Archival photographs show the MoU signing witnessed by notable figures, including former DE minister Prasert Chantraruangthong and other political and business leaders. Investigative reports highlight concerns about fast-track visas for foreign IT professionals, suggesting potential involvement of individuals linked to controversial businessman Benjamin “Ben Smith” Mauerberger.

As the DSI investigation progresses, Thai authorities aim to uncover the full extent of data misuse and its implications. They are poised to enforce regulations protecting citizens' privacy and ensuring compliance with the Computer Crime Act, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand's DSI is investigating a crypto project for potential legal violations and privacy issues.
