Thai authorities have launched a screening hub at the Sa Kaeo border to process around 6,000 Thai nationals returning from Cambodia. The initiative aims to distinguish scam victims from offenders and ensure that any individuals with outstanding warrants are prosecuted. The operation, set to commence on December 11, 2025, involves collaboration among six key agencies to coordinate the reception and legal proceedings for the returnees.

The program begins with immigration police conducting National Referral Mechanism checks to identify potential victims of human trafficking or scams. Returnees will be categorized into three groups: those who left Thailand legally with valid documentation, those whose documentation has expired, and individuals who exited the country through unauthorized means.

Subsequently, Khlong Luek police will examine whether any returnees are associated with outstanding warrants or criminal investigations. Individuals cleared of legal issues will be transferred to the Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office for additional support and assistance. Authorities have pinpointed potential sites in Sa Kaeo province to serve as social screening centers, including Burapha University’s Sa Kaeo Campus, the Sa Kaeo Provincial Territorial Defence Volunteer Company, and the 19th Military Circle Club in Tha Kasem.

The operation is a joint effort by the Immigration Police, Khlong Luek Police Station, 12th Ranger Regiment Control Unit, Aranyaprathet District Territorial Defence Volunteers, Crowd Control Unit, and Tourist Police. This collaborative approach aims to safely reintegrate scam and labor exploitation victims while prosecuting those involved in transnational scams.

Experts highlight that the center is crucial for addressing the complexities of sorting genuine victims from those involved in illicit activities. Looking ahead, the focus will be on expanding support systems for returnees and ensuring thorough legal processes for offenders, reported The Nation.
