Two men were arrested inside Rajamangala National Stadium on 12 December 2025 after allegedly promoting an online gambling website during the SEA Games 2025 football event. Officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) and Hua Mak Police Station apprehended the suspects, who had blended in with spectators before attempting to advertise the site. Police say the incident has raised concerns about damage to the reputation of the 33rd SEA Games, for which Thailand is the host nation.

The operation was conducted under the direction of senior officers from the CCIB, including Pol. Gen. Thana Chuwong, Deputy National Police Chief; Pol. Lt. Gen. Surapol Prembutr, CCIB Commissioner; and Pol. Col. Prasopchok Iampinit, Superintendent of Hua Mak Police Station. Officers from the Technology Crime Suppression Division and investigators from Hua Mak Police collaborated in the arrests. The suspects were identified as Mr. Tan, 51, a Vietnamese national and Mr. Nitikun, 42, from Tak Province.

Police stated that both men posed as football supporters to gain access to the stadium, where they promoted a gambling website. Seized items included a T-shirt and a cap, each bearing the logo “OKVIP”, which officers allege were used to advertise the platform. Authorities noted that similar attempts to promote online gambling during the SEA Games had been circulating widely on social media, prompting heightened monitoring.

The discovery of covert gambling promotions at the venue was viewed as harmful to the event’s public image and potentially misleading to spectators. Senior National Police Office leadership subsequently ordered intensified investigations and joint operations between cybercrime and metropolitan police units. The aim was to track, suppress, and prevent any further illegal advertising within the stadium precincts.

Initial charges were issued under Section 12 of the Gambling Act, which applies to those who announce, advertise, or persuade others to engage in gambling. The offence carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to 2,000 baht, or both. Police added that if the conduct involved encouraging minors or causing them to behave inappropriately, further charges may be brought under Section 26(3) in conjunction with Section 78 of the Child Protection Act, with penalties of up to three months in prison or fines of up to 30,000 baht.

Khoasod reported that both suspects were taken to Hua Mak Police Station for formal questioning and legal processing. Investigators are expected to continue examining evidence and monitoring for additional coordinated attempts to promote illegal gambling during the SEA Games. Police reaffirmed that they will pursue legal action against all individuals involved, including online promoters, influencers, and associated marketing personnel.
