The Ministry of Commerce has announced the start of technical-level tariff negotiations between the United States and Thailand. This follows a phone call between Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and US President Donald Trump on Friday night. Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun, who joined the call, highlighted the focus on regional peace and stability.

Background discussions revealed differing perspectives between Mr. Anutin and Mr. Trump, but no policy disputes. During the conversation, President Trump asked about the trade negotiations' progress and committed to speeding up coordination and honouring past promises. Minister Suphajee stressed the importance of keeping security and economic matters separate to prevent delays.

Industry consultations held on Thursday with the US-Asean Business Council and over 40 US business representatives showed a consensus on the benefits of concluding trade talks quickly. They emphasised the importance of Thai exports to the US, like fragrant rice. These stakeholders agreed that timely negotiations would boost trade, investment, and consumer benefits.

Ms. Suphajee mentioned that the US State Department would work with the US Trade Representative to start technical-level talks, indicating a positive step in enhancing trade relations. This move could lead to increased bilateral trade and investment, benefiting both nations, reported the Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • US President Trump has promised to expedite coordination for tariff talks.
  • Thai exports, especially agricultural products, are key to US markets.
  • Technical-level discussions will be initiated by the US Trade Representative.

The only thing Thailand should be doing is giving the middle finger to Trump.

Considering how much the CP group and many others export to USA I don't think that will ever happen

Why new talks about tariffs ?

Has anything changed since instating them ?

Anutin needs to understand that trump is doesn’t give a stuff about Thailand or its people. He’s nothing but a criminal who uses his job to shakedown, and line his own pockets, from other countries with his idiotic threats of outrageous tariffs based on distorted figures he makes up in his demented mind. What is also so pathetic is the amount of smoke he needs to have blown up his ass, like being told how much he deserves the Nobel peace prize, which he’ll never get in a million years, which inevitably sweetens the deal. Look how he folded to China without them doing a thing  and earning his warranted nickname of Taco. He’s not a deal maker but a shyster.

export to USA

Thailand has likely a favorable trade balance with the US.

Trump believes that when the US accepts total imported value that exceeds US export value, the exporting foreign country is "ripping off" the US. Hence the tariffs.

Trump insists on reversing the math: Thailand will export value to the US that is less than import value from the US. That is not going to happen considering what Thailand needs from the US versus what the US needs from Thailand.

Trump is fully aware that imports from parts of Asia have sky-rocketed over the last year....

while exports from China have dropped after the tariff war.

He is going to be seeking answers about trans-shipments before making any resolutions.

Shyster doesn't come anywhere near a fitting description.
