Thailand surged past 130 gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games, even as the men's sepak takraw team suffered an unexpected loss. This remarkable achievement came after Thailand claimed 35 gold medals on a single day. Despite the setback, Thailand remains on track to reclaim the overall title.

The long-standing rivalry between Thailand and Malaysia in sepak takraw took a surprising turn when Malaysia defeated Thailand for the first time in 19 SEA Games. However, Thailand's women’s team secured their seventh consecutive title with a win over Vietnam. Thai weightlifter Weeraphon Wichuma triumphed by breaking the world record in the 71kg division, lifting a total of 347kg.

Weeraphon expressed his satisfaction with achieving a new world record and hopes to surpass 200kg in the future. Patsaphong Thongsuk also shone in the 65kg weightlifting category, securing gold. Thailand's debut in baseball5 was triumphant, leading to a victory over Indonesia in the final.

Thai golfers dominated at the Siam Country Club Pattaya, winning all four titles for the first time in a decade. Pongsapak Laopakdee led the men's individuals, while Thai women golfers claimed the top spots in their category. The team events also mirrored the golfers' success.

The success of the Thai baseball5 team has been hailed as a potential boost for the sport in Thailand, emphasising its accessibility. Similarly, veteran equestrian Chalermcharn Yotviriyapanit helped Thailand reclaim mixed team dressage gold after a 30-year gap. Jutatip Maneephan, a cyclist, continued to dominate the women's criterium road.

Thai jet ski riders won five out of six titles, and 10-year-old Chunkao "Mini" Udomphen emerged victorious in the women's street skateboarding event. Thailand’s sailing team and women’s table tennis team celebrated victories, and the women’s volleyball team reached the final. The country topped the medal standings with 130 golds, followed by Indonesia with 39, reported Thai PBS WORLD.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand excels at SEA Games with over 130 golds despite setbacks.
  • Thai athletes break records in weightlifting and golf tournaments.
  • The country continues to lead the medal standings significantly.

I suppose Cambodians going home early helped a bit in the haul....

I should do some research into these Games - some of the sports I've never heard of and I might find something worth watching!

I tuned in to watch athletics yesterday afternoon hoping to see some track, but it was actually the men's pole vault competition. It was held in the national stadium which has a decent capacity, but it looked like there were less than a thousand spectators. Disappointing for the athletes.
