A senior police officer has been found dead in a hotel room in central Chaiyaphum, sparking shock within the local police force and prompting an official investigation. Police Colonel Somchai Sophonpanyaporn, Deputy Commander of Chaiyaphum Provincial Police, was discovered lying deceased beside his bed in a well-known hotel in the city centre. The death was reported on 16 December and is being treated as unexplained pending further forensic examination.

Police at Muang Chaiyaphum Police Station received the report and alerted senior officers before deploying investigators to the scene. The body was found in room 222 of the hotel in Nai Mueang subdistrict, Muang district, Chaiyaphum province. Colonel Somchai was found unclothed, with no visible signs of a struggle or physical assault.

Colonel Somchai had only transferred to his new post eight days earlier and had been staying at the hotel since arriving in the province. According to preliminary assessments, investigators suspect he may have had an underlying medical condition, although no cause of death has been confirmed. The body was sent for a detailed post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause.

Deputy Chaiyaphum Provincial Police Commander Colonel Anupap Phiw-on provided further context, stating that Colonel Somchai had travelled to take up his new appointment eight days prior. On the evening before his death, he went out for dinner in Chaiyaphum city before returning to his hotel. He was scheduled to meet Police Major General Sujarit Panlek, the Chaiyaphum Provincial Police Commander, early the next morning.

The meeting was intended as preparation for a formal visit to the Chaiyaphum governor at the governor’s residence. When Colonel Somchai could not be contacted as expected, Police Major General Sujarit instructed his driver to go to the hotel to check on him. It was then that Colonel Somchai was found deceased in his room.

The incident has caused concern among colleagues due to the officer’s senior rank and the sudden nature of his death so soon after his transfer. Police have stressed that there were no immediate indications of foul play at the scene. Investigators are awaiting the results of forensic examinations before drawing any conclusions. Daily News reported that authorities have confirmed that standard investigative procedures are being followed.
