Thai-MECC Warns Vessels on Illegal Oil Transport to Cambodia

The Thai-MECC issued a stern warning to Thai vessels about changing their nationality to transport oil illegally into Cambodia. This follow-up comes after a noticeable drop in such incidents, following the implementation of stringent measures aimed at curbing this illegal activity. According to the Thai-MECC, two vessels involved were inspected and cooperated with the authorities, signaling the effectiveness of the new monitoring system.

Rear Admiral Jumpon Nakbua detailed at a press conference that the National Security Council had approved enhanced measures to oversee the transportation of energy and military supplies to Cambodia. These new strategies emphasize improved maritime surveillance, focusing on energy shipments, and involve multi-agency coordination with organizations like the Royal Thai Navy and the Department of Revenue. The overarching objective is to thwart smuggling and ensure obedience to national security regulations.

The Thai-MECC's strategy includes four main components: bolstered surveillance of energy transports, collaboration among authorities covering 23 coastal provinces, strict oversight of international shipping law compliance, and reinforced maritime security without affecting regions involved in Thailand-Cambodia conflicts. Jumpon highlighted that these measures are in line with international legal frameworks, specifically referencing Thailand's sovereign rights and the UNCLOS.

The recent decrease in unlawful actions reflects the success of these protocols. Even with reduced occurrences, some vessels are still adapting to comply with the newly enforced rules, and authorities are maintaining vigilance over any suspicious activities. This ongoing scrutiny is directed at ships not displaying proper national identification or unlawfully altering their nationality to evade enforcement.

The Thai-MECC reiterated that any breach, such as concealing a ship's nationality or engaging in illicit oil trade, will face stringent legal consequences as per Thailand's maritime laws. Authorities remain committed to monitoring and addressing any violations to maintain regional security and legal compliance, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai-MECC enforces stricter measures on illegal oil transportation.
  • Recent measures saw cooperation from vessels and reduced incidents.
  • Authorities continue to monitor and penalize maritime law violations.

Can they do this in international waters?? and in Cambodian waters?? Thailand claims it is according international rules, but the rules are not always respected by Thailand too...I have the impression that Thailand wants to block everything that is going to Cambodia, but I am afraid that is not allowed, or did they got the ideas of Israel?

That's what I thought when I read the headline... Can they stop and threaten Thai vessels (and companies)? Hell, yeah... - Will get really interesting once other country's vessels intent to deliver oil...
