The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has alerted residents in three Songkhla districts—Muang, Hat Yai, and Na Mom—about potential flash floods and mudslides due to heavy rainfall. Utilizing cell broadcast services from AIS, True, and NT, the DDPM issued warnings advising locals to remain vigilant and prepare for possible water overflows from rivers and canals.

The alert was shared on the DDPM's Facebook page at 1 pm, highlighting the risk of rapid water rise in low-lying areas and the danger of electrical hazards. Residents are urged to move valuables to safety and contact the DDPM hotline at 1784 for assistance if needed.

In a related development, the Hat Yai Municipality released an urgent warning following recent severe floods, urging preparedness for further flooding due to ongoing downpours. The municipality's sixth statement on the flood situation mentioned an accumulation of 140 millimeters of rain recorded at the Khlong Rian Monkey Cheek Station, leading to rising water levels in nearby canals.

As of noon Thursday, the following water levels were reported: Khlong U Tapao at Ban Muang Kong and Bang Sala recorded 5.22 and 5.15 meters below the bank respectively. Other canals, too, showed significant water levels, prompting a "Yellow Flag" warning for specific areas and communities around Hat Yai.

To mitigate risks, the municipality is addressing drainage system limitations by clearing blockages and coordinating with officials for protective measures in vulnerable areas. Residents are advised to monitor updates closely and contact local emergency numbers for information and assistance, reported The Nation.

Yes, I got an emergency message just after midday, yes it rained overnight, yes we had heavy rain through the morning, but nothing we don't normally get this time of year. Flooding in Hat Yai occurs when we get prolonged heavy rain (+100 mm) for two or three days, on top of a period of steady wet season rainfall which saturates the ground, Hat Yai has been dry with very little rain for two weeks. There is rain forecast for tonight and tomorrow, but after that it's dry, the river and canals are currently low and can handle this. All this alert did was cause unnecessary anxiety, and if they keep it up, when a significant flood is imminent it'll be the 'boy that cried wolf' , and people won't take heed.

It's easy enough to check the camera feeds on the Hat Yai Climate website (though several are yet to be fixed post the flood) and they show water levels aren't drastically high.
